Types of Computer Network

The document discusses different types of computer networks including personal area networks (PAN), local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN), and wide area networks (WAN). It defines each type of network by its geographical coverage and examples of uses. Components of data communication such as senders, receivers, messages, communication mediums, and protocols are also explained.

Types of Computer Network

Mr. Seaton
What is Data Communication?

 The transmission of data between two or more computers. Many computer

users need to connect their computer to other computers, whether located
close or by a remote site.
Components of Data Communication

Components of Data communication:

 Sender
 Message
 Communication Medium
 Receiver
 Protocol
Components of Data Communication

 Sender – This is the device that sends the message; it can be a computer,
workstation, smartphone, etc.

 Message- This is the information that is sent. Popular forms of information

includes; images, text, audio, video, etc.

 Receiver- This is the device that receives the incoming message.

Components of Data Communication

 Communication Medium- This is the physical pathway that the message

travels from the sender to the receiver. Examples of communication medium
include Twisted pair cable, Bluetooth, Radio waves (WIFI), etc.

 Protocol- This is a set of rules that governs how the data/ message is sent.
What is a Computer Network?

 A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to

share resources, exchange files or allow electronic communication.
 The computers on a network may be linked through cables, telephone lines,
radio waves, satellites or infrared light beams.
Types of Computer Network

Depending on the geographical area covered by a network, it is classified as:

 Local Area Network (LAN)
 Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
 Wide Area Network (WAN)
 Personal Area Network (PAN)

Personal Area Computer

 A PAN is a network that is used for communicating among computers and

computer devices in close proximity of around a few meters within a room.
 It can be used for communicating between the devices themselves or for
connecting to a larger network such as the internet.
 PANs can be wired or wireless.
Local Area Network

 A LAN is a network that is used for communicating among computer

devices, usually within an office building or home.
 LAN enables the sharing of resources such as files or hardware devices that
may be needed by multiple users.
 Is limited in size typically spanning a few hundred meters and no more than
a mile.
 Is fast, with speeds from 10Mbps to 10Gbps

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

 A metropolitan Area Network is a large computer network that usually spans

a city or a large campus.
 The MAN is optimized for a larger geographical area than a LAN ranging
from several blocks of buildings to entire cities.
 A MAN might be owned and operated by a single organization but it usually
will be used by many individuals and organizations.
Metropolitan
Area Network
(MAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)

 WAN covers a large geographical area such as a country, continent or even

the whole world.
 To cover great distances WAN may transmit data over leased high-speed
phone lines or wireless links such as satellites.
 The most Popular wide area network is the internet.
