Introduction to Mangroves ⋆.

ೃ࿔*: ・

🗣: What are mangroves?

★ Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in areas where
freshwater meets the ocean. They live in muddy, salty
water and have special structures to help them filter out
the salt. Mangroves are important for protecting the
coastline and provide homes for many types of animals.
1. Location 📍

★ Mangroves are found along coastlines, such as Southeast Asia,Africa,

Australia, and some parts of America.
★ Mangroves are typically found in tropical and subtropical regions along
coastlines where they thrive in water conditions.
★ They are commonly found in areas with sheltered coastlines, river
mouths, and intertidal zones.
★ Some regions with extensive mangrove ecosystems include Southeast
Asia, the Indo-Pacific region, West Africa, the Caribbean, and parts of
Central and South America. Additionally, mangroves can also be found
in smaller pockets in regions such as Florida in the United States and
parts of Australia.
2. Climate 🌤
★ The mangroves are a tropical species,
due to this they have a tropical climate.
★ They remain at temperatures above
19C °
★ They typically grow in climates which
are hot and humid.
★ Their climate is hot all year long.
★ They are able to cope till temperatures
under 5C ° but they work better in
tropical climates.
★ High humidity and ample rainfall.
3. Biodiversity🌴
🌲 Biodiversity within mangroves is incredibly diverse. These ecosystems support a wide
arrangements of plant and animal species adapted to the mangroves unique saline conditions.

🐠 Mangroves are home to various species of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, birds, and mammals.

🌲 Additionally, they provide essential habitats for multiple endangered and threatened species.

🐠Mangroves act as nurseries for fishes and offering protection from predators.

🌲 The intricate root systems of mangroves also serve as a vital habitat for micro-organisms and
contribute to the overall health and productivity of ecosystems.

4. Flora and fauna 🌺
● Flora refers to the plants of a particular region habitat or geological period.
● fauna on the other hand refers to all the animal life present in a particular region.
● Mangroves are defined as plants such as trees, shrubs, palms and ferns, growing within the
intertidal region of coastal and estuarine environments throughout the tropical and sub-
tropical area s around the world.
● Mainly, Snails,branches bryozoans,tunicates mollusks and more.
● fauna mainly found in a mangrove forest are, Bengal tiger, Dugong Phalanger, sanabras
and more.
5. Environmental threats ⛈
★ Mangroves face a threat of Deforestation which is clearing of
mangroves and forests for urban development, agriculture and
infrastructure projects reduces their habitat and disrupts their
ecosystem.
★ Another threat is pollution, this includes agricultural runoff,
industrial waste, and plastic pollution. Which harms the mangroves
ecosystem, which could be bad for both plants and animals.
★ Climate change is another problem, rising sea levels, increased
temperature and extreme weather conditions could all be a threat to
mangroves and the life around it.

6. Conservation efforts. 🏞
Following are ways we can protect the habitat of mangrove forests:
➢ fencing along the intertidal zone to prevent livestock access
➢ removing barriers to restore natural tidal flows
➢ designing waterfront structures such as boat ramps jetties and pathways to avoid or
minimise impacts on water flows
➢ avoiding driving, walking or biking through saltmarsh areas
➢ avoiding stormwater discharges into coastal habitats
➢ disposing of rubbish and chemicals responsibly
➢ removing weeds.
➢ In addition to this WWF also known as world wildlife fund has been working on saving
Mangrove forests and their aim is to o expand the global extent of mangrove habitat 20%
by the year 2030.
