Week 4 - Midterm Review

More advanced modifications of some logics

Demo of a 90-minute test
90-min mock
Lab midterm exam
90-min exam question
Q1. The model assumes that all Part materials including Cab Bottom; Cab Top;
Cab Door; Cab Side; Cab Back; Feet; Hinges; Handle for the Cabinet assembly
stage. Given data is shown as below:
Part assembly diagram
Flowchart of the system
Parts Assembly info
Process Time & Resrouce info
Requirements
a. Each part material is processed before assembled (the information is given in
Table 1). The failure rate of finished cabinet is 25%. Defective products will be reworked
by “rework_worker”, the finished product will move to “finishing station” (the information
is given in Figure 2 and Table 3). Following the flow chart of system (Figure 2) and
information of table, build logical model by ARENA in this case [Save as model “Your
name_ID_Q1a”].
b. Set up Run simulation model in 2.5 hours to counting the number of Finish
Cabinet. (Hint: Using Record module)
c. Assume that, the bottleneck of system at “finishing station”. How to improve the
process of “finishing station”?. Rebuilt model and show output comparison between two
systems [Save the modified model as “Your name_ID_Q1c”].
90-min exam question
Q2. People arrive at a barbershop with the interarrival time following EXPO(5) minutes. If the shop is full (it can
hold maximum 5 customers altogether due to the COVID restriction), 30% of the potential customers leave and
come back in TRIA(40,60,80) minutes. The others leave and do not return.
There are 2 barbers and 3 assistants in the shop. The customers first are served by 1 of the 3 assistants, which
takes about UNIF(5,10) minutes. Then they wait for the barbers and are served by 1 of the 2 barbers. One
barber gives a haircut in TRIA(6,8,10) minutes; the second takes TRIA(8,12,16) minutes. Customers go to
whichever barber that is idle at the time. If both barbers are busy, customers will go to the one with shorter
queue. After the haircut, the barber leaves the customer for assistance to give him/her a final touch and collect
the money, which takes another UNIF(5,10) minutes. The job priority of an assistance is (1-highest) serving new
customers, (2-medium) serving customers to leave.
At 12, the staff takes a 20 minutes lunch. They take turns so that there are always 1 barber and 1 assistant
during the break. If one is busy serving a customer, he will try to finish his job before taking a break.
The shop opens from 9am to 8pm. It does not receive new customers after 8pm, but continues to serve the last
customer.
Requirements
a. Create the simulation model. Create textboxes (Use “variable” animation) to
monitor total number of customers in the system, number of busy assistants,
states of barber 1 and barber 2 for verification purpose.
b. Run the simulation with 1 replication, infinite replication length and a
termination condition according to the text to collect the following statistics:
i. utilization of the assistances and 2 barbers
ii. average time customers spent in the shop
iii. total customers are served in a day
iv. average number of customers in the shop (Hint: Time persistent statistic)
v. total customers turn away and not return in a day
Modifications of logic
What does the entity represent ?
Students go to the library for group study in groups of 5,6,7,8,9 in the probability of
35%, 25%, 20%, 15%, and 5% respectively. Each table can hold 2 students and
the groups don’t join together for studying. There are 100 tables. If there are not
enough tables for the whole group, the group will not enter the library. Suppose
the groups come to the library in Poisson distribution of 5 groups per hour.
a. Build an ARENA model of the Library, knowing that the library operates from
8am to 8pm each day. Run simulation for 1 week.
b. How many groups leave without entering the library?
c. What’s the utilization rate of tables?
