Normal Probability Distribution Problem 1 With Answer

The document contains 3 normal probability distribution problems. The first problem asks to find the probability of a normally distributed variable being less than 40 given a mean of 30 and standard deviation of 4. The second problem asks to find the probability of a car's speed being more than 100 km/hr given speeds are normally distributed with mean 90 km/hr and standard deviation of 10 km/hr. The third problem asks to find the probability of time spent on a mobile phone being less than 30 minutes given usage is normally distributed with mean of 28 minutes and standard deviation of 8 minutes.

NORMAL PROBABILITY

DISTRIBUTION
PROBLEMS
1. X is a normally distributed variable with population mean= 30 and
standard deviation = 4. Find the probability
P(X < 40)

For x <40,
Population mean = 30
Standard deviation =4
Z=(x – population mean )/standard deviation Z=0 Z=2.5

z= (40 – 30) / 4 =2.5=0.49379

Hence P(z<2.5)= Total area to the left + area of 2.5 = 0.5+0.4938= 0.9938
2.A radar unit is used to measure the speeds of cars on a motorway. The
speeds are normally distributed with a mean of 90 km/hr and a standard
deviation of 10 km/hr. What is the probability that a car picked at random is
traveling at more than 100 km/hr?

Let x be the random variable that represents the speed of cars. x has
population mean = 90 and standard deviation = 10. We have to find the
probability that x is higher than 100 or P(x > 100)
Z=(x – population mean )/standard deviation
z = (100 - 90) / 10 = 1=0.8413
=> P(z > 1) = [total area] - [area to the left of z = 1]
=>0.5 - 0.3413 = 0.1587
The probability that a car selected at random has a speed greater than 100
km/hr is equal to 0.3413
3.Kevin uses his mobile phone for X minutes each day. X is a random
variable which may be modelled by a normal distribution with mean 28
minutes and standard deviation 8 minutes .Find the probability that on a
particular day Kevin uses his mobile phone for less than 30 minutes

Population mean = 28 mins

Standard deviation =8 mins
z=(x – population mean )/standard deviation
z= (30-28) / 8 =0.25=0.0987
=>P(z<0.25)
Required area=0.5+0.0987=0.5987
