Objectives:

Define the term software.

Identify the types of software
Compare the functions of the application
and system software.
Discuss the importance of software in the
entire computer operations.
ACTIVITY:
Observe the images below. What can you
say about the images?
SOFTWARE
 are the instructions that tell a computer what
to do.
 It comprises the entire set of programs, procedures, and routines
associated with the operation of a computer system.
 A set of instructions that directs a computer’s hardware to perform
a task called a program, or software program.
 collection of instructions that enable the user to interact with a
computer, its hardware, or perform tasks.
TYPES OF SOFTWARE
1.System Software
 it consists of the programs that control or maintain the operations
of the computer and its devices. It is with the operating system of a
computer once installed and provides the platform for running any
application software. System software can be updated by running
programs such as “Windows Update” for Windows series or
“Software update” for Mac OS. It is not meant to be run by the
end user.
Types of System Software
a. Operating System
 the most important program that runs on a computer. It is
software that helps communicate the software and
hardware.
b. Utility Software
 a program that performs maintenance tasks for the
computer resources.
c. Device Driver
 a program that allows a particular hardware device to work
and communicate with the computer system.
2. Applications Software

a program that does real work for the user. It is mostly created to
perform a specific task for a user. Application software acts as a
mediator between the end-user and System Software. It is also
known as an application package. It is user-specific and is designed
to meet the requirements of the user.
Two kinds of Application Software:
a. Basic Application Software
 basic application software also known as general
purpose applications and productivity applications.
These programs are widely used in nearly every
discipline and occupation. Word processors,
spreadsheets, database management systems, and
presentation graphics are the common types of basic
application software.
b. Specialized Application Software
 performs a single very specific type of task. Programs to
work out driving routes are one common example of
specialist application software. Other examples include
programs to work out payroll, calculate accounts, deal with
stock control and handle appointments.
Learning Activities #1 :
A.
1. Give examples of application software and software.
2. Does the application software depend on system software? Why?
3. What is the role of system and application software in the
computer system?
4. Discuss the importance of software in the entire computer
operation.
B.
1.-3. What are the types of system software?
Describe briefly each type.
4-5 What are the two kinds of application
software? Describe briefly each kind.
C. Using the venn diagram, show the similarities and
differences between the two fields: application
and system software.
