Magnetic Storage Devices

The document discusses different types of magnetic storage devices including magnetic tapes and magnetic disks. Magnetic tapes are commonly used for sequential data access and backup storage due to their portability and low cost. Magnetic disks allow both sequential and random data access and include floppy disks and hard disks, with hard disks providing more storage capacity and reliability than floppy disks.

MAGNETIC

STORAGE
DEVICES
….
WHAT IS A
MAGNETIC
STORAGE
DEVICE ?storage medium , in
It is a type of secondary
which different patterns of magnetization are
used to represent stored bits or bytes of
information
TYPES OF MAGNETIC STORAGE
DEVICES :

01
MAGNETIC TAPES ..
02
MAGNETIC DISKS
01. MAGNETIC TAPES
✦ It is a commonly used sequential access secondary storage device .

✦ That consists of a half inch wide tape made up of mylar material , coated
with magnetic material

✦ In which Data is stored as binary digits ( i.e 0 and 1 ) in magnetic tape ,

which represents the presence and absence of magnetic fields

✦ Magnetic tapes provide a compact and inexpensive method of storing data

and programs

✦ They are mainly used for backup of data .

✦ Tape ribbon is generally stored in the form reels or cassettes.

EXAMPLES
EXAMPLES ::

Vhs tape Audio cassette

ADVANT
AGES :

1.
1. 2.
2. 3. 4.
Portable Reversible Durable
means We can carry this means data can be erased Easy data transferThe life of a magnetic tape is
very high as compared to
storage device from one from tape and new data can
Data can be easily some other storage devices
place to another be stored on it
transferred from one
computer to another that are
not linked together with the
help of magnetic tapes
DISADVANTAGES :

1. 2. 3.
Sensitive Sequential data Delicate
Magnetic tape is sensitive to
dust , moisture and other
accessing Tape ribbon may get
twisted due to warping,
environmental factors Due to their sequential resulting in loss of stored
access nature, they are not
data
suitable for storage of those
data that frequently require
to be accessed randomly
02. MAGNETIC DISK
✦ is a random access secondary storage device

✦ Which is like a gramophone record ,that is made up of

plastic like material called mylar

✦ In which data is stored in the form of magnetic spots with

the help of read / write heads that are small
electromagnets .

✦ And that Data is randomly stored and retrieved from

these disks
NOTE :
✦ To store data on a disk it needs to be
formatted first

✦ Formatting is the process of creating tracks

and sectors on a disks surface sector

✦ Tracks are the invisible concentric circles on

a disks surface

✦ Each track of a disk is subdivided into

portions called sectors
TYPES OF MAGNETIC DISK
On the basis of read / write mechanism magnetic disk can be classified into two types :

01
FLOPPY DISK / .

REMOVABLE DISK

02
HARD DISK / FIXED
DISK

….

..
01. FLOPPY
DISK
✦Floppy disk was one of the most popular data storage devices used for
permanent data storage before the invention of CDs .

✦Floppy disk consists of a round flat piece of plastic , coated with a

magnetic a magnetic material

✦That is generally encased in a cover to give handling protection to disk

surface

✦The two main dimensions of floppy disk are 3.5 inch and 5.35 inch

✦The storage capacity of 3.5 inch floppy is 1.44MB and 5.25 inch floppy
is 1.2 MB
Advantages : Disadvantages :
1. Floppy disks are portable 1. Floppy disks were not very much
durable . It could be used for 3-4
2. They are reusable i.e we can times only .
write new data on a floppy disk
after erasing the previous one 2. They are slower to access than hard
disks and have less storage capacity
3. They allow sequential as well
as random access of data 3. Floppy disk is sensitive to dust
temperature and other environmental
factors.

02. HARD DISK
✦ Hard disk also known as fixed disks is another type of storage device
used for permanent data storage
02. HARD DISK
✦ A hard disk contains a no. of platters of aluminium coated with magnetic
material

✦ Each of these platters is divided into tracks and sectors

✦ All the platters are arranged on a spindle

✦ The spindle is attached to a motor that can rotate at a speed of 5600

rotations per minute(rpm) or 7200rpm
Advantages : Disadvantages :

.. :
MAIN FEATURES :
✦ Hard disk are enclosed in a sealed container , that makes it a non
removable form of storage device

✦ Hard disks hold more data than floppy disk . Its storage capacity
comes in gigabyte (GB) and also in terabytes (TB) .

✦ Hard disks offer quicker access to data than floppy disks

✦ Hard disks are more reliable than floppy disks because they are
generally fitted inside the cabinet of the computer

✦ Hard disks offer very low cost of data storage .
