    Some rules applicable to warehouse management.
     Identify the objectives of the facility

     Maintain safety stock levels

     Control the flow of goods

     Maintain quality control

     Use the right software


    The responsibilities of employer in warehousing
    • Under health and safety legislation employers must, “so far as is reasonably

    practicable”, provide employees with adequate and appropriate welfare facilities,

    such as washing, toilet, rest and changing facilities, and somewhere clean to eat

    and drink during breaks while they are at work. In addition, the employer has legal

    requirements concerning ventilation, temperature, lighting, cleanliness, room

    dimensions, workstations and seating, floor conditions, falls or falling objects,

    transparent and translucent doors, gates and walls, windows, skylights and

    ventilators, traffic routes and escalators. Many of these are of particular

    importance to health and safety in warehouses.

    The responsibilities of employees in warehousing
    • Handle loading and unloading operations in a warehouse.
    • Handle sensitive items and materials in a delicate manner.
    • Check and identify numbers and labels on assigned items and materials.
    • Maintain warehouse premises neat, clean and tidy.
    • Drive trucks and vans carrying items and materials.
    • Organize and rearrange items and materials neatly in respective places in a
    warehouse.
    • Maintain and manage inventory levels and controls.
    • Check and inspect the conditions of items and materials while loading and
    unloading.
    • Ensure compliance of safety procedures and practices.

    Personal Protective Equipments in warehousing
    • Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE ) refers to the essential clothing and
    equipment that can potentially ensure the safety of workers on site or in a
    warehouse environment. Some of the common PPE for warehouse workers can
    include; Hard hats, High visibility clothing, Safety goggles/glasses etc.

    The significance of warehouse Personal Protective Equipment

    Warehouses are identified as hazardous work environments where serious


    accidents occur, that may also result in a fatality
     The purpose of PPE is to reduce worker exposure to hazards when engineering and
    administrative controls are not feasible or effective in reducing risks to acceptable
    levels.
     PPE requirements are essential as they are intended to keep workers safe and
    prevent a near miss from becoming a serious injury.

    Risks in warehousing
    The risks
    • Warehouses and storage buildings can be dangerous environments to work in,
    with many potential hazards and associated risks. The risks in warehouses include:
    manual handling/musculoskeletal disorders, slips and trips, falling objects, vehicles
    in and around the warehouse, work at height, lighting, hazardous substances and
    fire.
    • The key part of managing these risks is the risk assessment — the process of
    evaluating risks to workers' health and safety from workplace hazards in order to
    determine the measures required to eliminate or reduce the level of
    incidents/accidents.
    • The risk assessment should identify the key health and safety priorities within the
    warehouse so that efforts can be concentrated on these priorities.
