CCP303

- The document provides information on calculating the median when frequency data is missing from a distribution. - It discusses using the median formula and substituting missing frequencies as variables to solve for their values. - Examples are provided to demonstrate finding missing frequencies given the total frequency, median, and partial frequency data. The key is setting up equations based on the median formula and cumulative frequency table.

CCP-303.38 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you will be

able to :

 Calculate MISSING Frequency, when Median

value is given

CCP-303.38 2
Recap
 Median for continuous series (more than cumulative
frequency table) calculated as follows:
 Convert cumulative frequency table into simple
frequency table
 Find cumulative frequencies
 Find Median class with the value of
m=Size of N/2th item
 Apply the formula: L2-L1
L1+ -------- (m-c)
f1

CCP-303.38 3
If Frequency is MISSING

 If only ONE frequency is missing assume it as “ f1 “

 If TWO frequencies missing, assume them “ f1” and
“f2”
 Calculate Cumulative frequency
 Obtain total. (For ex: 100+f1+f2)
 Substitute values in Median formula.
 Solve equation, to get values of “f1” and “f2”

CCP-303.38 4
Example 1:

Find the missing frequency in the following

Distribution, if N is 170 and Median is 35

Variable 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70

Frequency 10 20 ? 40 ? 25 15

CCP-303.38 5
Solution to Ex. 1

Given N = 170 and Median = 35

Assume missing frequency of the class 20-30 = f1
and 40-50 = f2
CALCULATION OF MISSING FREQUENCIES

VARIABLE FREQUENCY CUMULATIVE

FREQUENCY
0-10 10 10
10-20 20 30
20-30 f1 30+f1
30-40 40 70+f1
40-50 f2 70+f1+f2
50-60 25 95+f1+f2
60-70 15 110+f1+f2
CCP-303.38 6
Solution contd

m = Size of N/2th item

= Size of 170/2th item
= Size of 85th item
Since Median is 35, it lies in the class 30-40
L 2 – L1
M = L1+ ------------- (m-c)
f1

40-30
35 = 30 + ------- [85-(30+f1)]
40
35 = 30 + 10 x (55-f1)
40

CCP-303.38 7
Solution contd

35-30 = (55-f1)/4
5 = (55-f1)/4 Missing frequency 1

20 = 55-f1
f1 = 55-20
f1 = 35
We know that 110+f1+f2 = 170
110+35+f2 = 170
Missing frequency 2
145 + f2 = 170
f2 = 170-145
f2 = 25
CCP-303.38 8
Example-2

Solution to Ex. 2
Given N = 100 and Median = 30
Assume missing frequency of class 10-20 = f1
and class 40-50 = f2
CALCULATION OF MISSING FREQUENCIES

40-50 f2 65+f1+f2
50-60 10 75+f1+f2
N = 100

CCP-303.38 10
Solution contd

m = Size of N/2th item

= Size of 100/2th item
= Size of 50th item
Since Median is 30, it lies in the class 30-40
M= L2 – L1 (m-c)

30 = 30 + ---- x (15-f1)
30 CCP-303.38 11
Solution contd

30-30 = (15-f1)/3
0 = (15-f1)/3
Missing frequency 1
0 = 15-f1
f1 = 15-0
f1 = 15
We know that 75+f1+f2 = 100
75+15+f2 = 100 Missing frequency 2
90 + f2 = 100
f2 = 100-90
f2 = 10
