CCP303

The document discusses calculating the median for discrete data series. It provides three key steps: [1] arrange the data in ascending or descending order, [2] find the cumulative frequencies, and [3] the median is the value corresponding to the data point at or above (N+1)/2, where N is the total frequency. Several examples are provided to demonstrate calculating the median from different data sets arranged in a frequency distribution table.

DEPARTMENT OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION

ANDHRA PRADESH

Name : Dr. G. R. JYOTHI

Designation : Lecturer
Branch : D.C.C.P.
Institute : SGMGPT, Abdullahpurmet
Year : III semester
Subject : Quantitative Techniques-I
Subject code : CCP-303
Topic : Median
Sub topic : Calculation of Median
Duration : 50 mts
Teaching Aids: : PPT, Animation

CCP303.33 11
Objectives:

On completion of this period you would be

able to:
 Calculate Median - Discrete series

CCP303.33 2
Recap
 Median is middle-most value of the variables
that are arranged in order
 Median for ungrouped data = Size of (n+1)/2th
observation provided the observations are
arranged in either ascending or descending
order

CCP303.33 3
Calculation of Median
Discrete Series
Steps:
 Arrange data (x) in ascending order or
descending order
 Find out cumulative frequencies
 Formula: M = Size of (N+1)/2th item

CCP303.33 4
Steps

 Now look at Cumulative Frequency (cf) column and find out

total which is either equal to (N+1)/2th item or next higher
than that value. The value of the variable (x) corresponding
to “ cf ” is Median value.

 That gives the value of median

where M = Median
N = Total frequency

CCP303.33 5
Example 1:

From the following data find the Median:

Income (Rs.) No. of persons

120 24
160 26
90 16
220 20
260 6
190 30

CCP303.33 6
Solution

CALCULATION OF MEDIAN

Income arranged in No. of persons Cumulative frequency

ascending order f c.f.
X
90 16 16
120 24 40 (16+24)
160 26 66 (40+26)
190 30 96 (66+30)
220 20 116 (96+20)
260 6 122 (116+6) - N
N = 122

CCP303.33 7
Solution contd...

Median = Size of (N+1)/2th item

= Size of (122+1)/2th item
= Size of 123/2th item
= size of 61.5th item
Size of 61.5th item = 160
Hence median income = Rs. 160

CCP303.33 8
Example 2:

From the following data, find the value of Median:

Income (Rs.) No. of persons

1000 24

1500 26
800 16
2000 20
2500 11

1800 30

CCP303.33 9
Solution 2

CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
Income arranged in No. of persons Cumulative frequency
ascending order f c.f.
X
800 16 16
1000 24 40 (16+24)
1500 26 66(40+26)
1800 30 96 (66+30)
2000 20 116 (96+20)
2500 11 127 (116+11) - N
N = 127

CCP303.33 10
Solution contd

Median = Size of (N+1)/2th item

= Size of (127+1)/2th item
= Size of 128/2th item
= size of 64th item
Size of 64th item = 1500
Hence median wage = Rs. 1500

CCP303.33 11
Example 3:
Calculate Median from the following frequency
distribution:
Marks No. of students
5 20
10 43
15 75
20 67
25 72
30 45
35 39
40 9
45 8
50 6
CCP303.33 12
Solution to Ex.3

CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
Let Marks = X and No. of students = f
Marks (X) No. of students ( f) Cumulative frequency (c.f.)
5 20 20
10 43 63
15 75 138
20 67 205
25 72 277
30 45 322
35 39 361
40 9 370
45 8 378
50 6 384 – N
N = 384

CCP303.33 13
Solution contd

Median = Size of (N+1)/2th item

= Size of (384+1)/2th item
= Size of 385/2th item
= Size of 192.5th item
Size of 192.5th item = 20
Hence, Median marks = 20

CCP303.33 14
