CCP303

The document discusses the calculation of harmonic mean for continuous data series. It provides the formula for harmonic mean of a continuous series as the total frequency (N) divided by the sum of the frequency divided by the mid-point (f/m) of each class interval. Two examples are shown to demonstrate calculating the harmonic mean step-by-step by finding the mid-point, frequency divided by mid-point, and summing the results. The harmonic mean is the total frequency divided by the summed results. Quiz and assignment questions are provided to reinforce the topic.

Subject Code : CCP-303
Topic : Harmonic Mean (H.M)
Sub-Topic : Calculation of H.M.
Presentation Duration : 50 Minutes
Teaching Aids used : PPT and Animations
CCP303.30 1
Objectives

On completion of the topic, you will be

able to learn:
 Calculation of Harmonic Mean
 Continuous series

CCP303.30 2
Recap

 Harmonic Mean is “ the reciprocal of the

arithmetic mean of the reciprocal of the
individual observations”
 H.M.-Individual series = n
∑ (1/X)
 H.M.- Discrete series = N
∑(f/X)

CCP303.30 3
Calculation of Harmonic Mean
Continuous Series
Steps:
 Find the mid value of the classes (X)
 Find the reciprocal of each mid value i.e. (1/X)
 Multiply reciprocal of each mid value by its
frequency i.e. (f x 1/X)
 Sum the products ∑ (f x 1/ X)
 Divide total frequencies (N) by the sum of the
products
 Hence H.M. = N or N
∑ (f x 1/ m) ∑(f/m)
CCP303.30 4
Example 1:

From the following frequency distribution

calculate the Harmonic mean:

Class Frequency
40-50 15
50-60 19
60-70 20
70-80 35
80-90 25
90-100 16

CCP303.30 5
Solution to Ex.1 Frequency

Calculation of Harmonic Mean

Class Mid value Reciprocals Frequency Products

(m) (1/m) (f) (f x 1/m)
40-50 45 0.0222 15 0.3330
50-60 55 0.0182 19 0.3458
60-70 65 0.0154 20 0.3080
70-80 75 0.0133 35 0.4655
80-90 85 0.0118 25 0.2950
90-100 95 0.0105 16 0.1680
N = 130 ∑ (f x 1/m) = 1.9153

CCP303.30 6
Solution contd
Harmonic Mean = N
∑ (f x 1/m)
here N = 130, ∑ (f/X) = 1.9153, then
Harmonic Mean = 130/1.9153
= 67.87
∴Harmonic Mean = 67.87

CCP303.30 7
Example 2:

From the following data compute the value of

Harmonic Mean:
Class interval: 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60
frequency: 4 6 10 7 3

CCP303.30 8
Solution to Ex.2
Calculation of Harmonic Mean
Mid-point = (lower
limit + upper
limit)/2

Class interval Mid-points Frequency f/m

m f
10-20 15 4 0.267
20-30 25 6 0.240
30-40 35 10 0.286
40-50 45 7 0.156
50-60 55 3 0.055
N = 30 ∑(f/m) = 1.004

CCP303.30 9
Solution contd
Harmonic Mean = N
∑ (f/m)
here N = 30, ∑ (f/m) = 1.004, then
Harmonic Mean = 30/1.004
= 29.88
Harmonic Mean = 29.88

CCP303.30 10
Summary
 Harmonic Mean
 Continuous Series = N or N
∑ (f/m) ∑(f x 1/m)
 Mid-point = (Lower Limit + Upper Limit)/2
