CCP303

- Harmonic mean is calculated as the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals of the values. It is represented by the formula: H.M. = n / Σ(1/x) - The document discusses how to calculate harmonic mean from individual data series. It provides examples such as calculating the harmonic mean of the data: 125, 130, 75, 10, 45, 0.5, 0.4, 500, 150, 5. - The key merits and demerits of harmonic mean are also summarized, such as it is based on each item but is difficult to compute.

Institute : SGMGPT, Abdullahpurmet
Year/Semester : III Semester
Subject : Quantitative Techniques-I
Subject Code : CCP-303
Topic : Harmonic Mean (H.M)
Sub-Topic : Merits and Demerits, Calculation of H.M.
Presentation Duration : 50 Minutes
Teaching Aids used : PPT and Animations
CCP302.28 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be

able to:
 Define Harmonic Mean (H.M.)

 List the Merits and Demerits of Harmonic Mean

 Calculate Harmonic Mean in Individual series

CCP302.28 2
Recap
Geometric Mean is “the Nth root of the product of N
items or values”.
Individual series = Antilog ∑ log X
N
Discrete Series = Antilog ∑ f log X
N
Continuous Series = Antilog ∑ f log m
N

CCP302.28 3
Harmonic Mean – Definition:

 “ the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the

reciprocal of the individual observations”

CCP302.28 4
Symbolically

H.M. = N
(1/x1 + 1/x2 +1/x3 +…+1/xn)

CCP302.28 5
Harmonic Mean - Merits

 Based on each and every item

 Gives better results for problems relating to time
and rates
 Suitable to algebraic manipulation

CCP302.28 6
Harmonic Mean - Demerits

 Difficult to understand
 Difficult to compute
 Gives largest weight to smallest items
 Value cannot be computed when positive and
negative items are in series (or) when one or
more items are zero

CCP302.28 7
Calculation of Harmonic Mean
Individual Series
Steps:

 Find out the reciprocal of value of each item

i.e., (1/x)
 Obtain total of the reciprocals i.e., (∑1/x)
 Divide number of items (n) by total of
reciprocals
 Hence Harmonic Mean = N
(∑1/x)

CCP302.28 8
Example 1:

Calculate Harmonic Mean from the give data:

125, 130, 75, 10, 45, 0.5, 0.4,

500, 150, 5

CCP302.28 9
Solution to Ex.1
Calculation of Harmonic Mean
X 1/X
125 0.0080
130 0.0077
75 0.0133
10 0.1000
45 0.0222
0.5 2.0000
0.4 2.5000
500 0.0020
150 0.0067
5 0.2000
N = 10 ∑(1/X) = 4.8599
CCP302.28 10
Solution contd
Harmonic Mean = n
∑(1/X)
= 10
4.8599
= 2.06
Harmonic Mean = 2.06

CCP302.28 11
Example 2:

Calculate Harmonic mean from the following data:

2574, 475, 75, 5, 0.8, 0.08, 0.005, 0.0009

CCP302.28 12
Solution to Ex.2
Calculation of Harmonic Mean

X (1/X)
2574 0.0004
475 0.0021
75 0.0133
5 0.2000
0.8 1.2500
0.08 12.5000
0.005 200.0000
0.0009 1111.1111
N=8 ∑(1/X) = 1325.0769

CCP302.28 13
Solution contd..

Harmonic Mean = n
∑(1/X)
= 8
1325.0769
