REVOLUTION
First estate constituted the clergy
French society was divided into three main classes known as
estates .

Second estate constituted the nobility

Rest of the population constituted the third estate


The third estate was the remaining 98% of the population .
• BOURGEOISIE :- merchants , well educated , believe in liberty and equality , and had
to pay taxes
• WORKERS IN THE CITY :- earned low wages , often unemployed
• PEASANTS :- half of their income was paid out to the nobles , taxes and church

of french revolution .
* The ideas of equality , fraternity , liberty spread from france to

countries .
* It established the feeling of nationalism in the people of the

* Many people believed that napoleon was a liberator who would
bring freedom for people .
* But soon the Napoleonic armies came to be known as an
invading force .
* He was finally defeated at waterloo in 1815 .

* Abbesieyes brought the pamphlet “what is the third estate ?”
* The Marseillaise was a patriotic song composed by Roget De L ‘ Isle and later it
became national anthem of France .
