Information Management

Kuda Sibanda
Unit 5: IT Infrastructure:
Hardware and Software
Question 2 (15 marks)
An education management information system provides proper and easy management of
academic and non-academic activities of the students. Discuss the three components of an
educational management information system.
Major components which make up the IT
infrastructure
The computer hardware is the technology
which will be used for computer
processing, data storage, input and
output. The computer hardware has
equipment which will be used for gathering
and
inputting data, there is a storage media to
store the data, and there is equipment for
delivering the processed
information using output devices
Computer software is made up of system
software and application software. System
software will be used to
manage resources and activities on the
computer. Application software will enable
the computer to perform specific
tasks for the end user. Application software
is generally purchased from outside
vendors
Data management technology will be
used for storing the data of the
business. The business will need
software which will help organise the
data and make it available to the
business users. The purpose of data
management software is to organise,
manage and process the business data
which is concerned with inventory,
customers and
vendors
Major computer hardware, data storage, input,
and output technologies used in business
Types of Computer Storage Devices
The Primary Storage or in other words
main memory will provide the CPU
with a working storage space for the
program instructions and data to be
stored while in execution. Main
memory provides the CPU with data
and instructions rapidly. The main
memory devices have many circuits
which are imprinted on a silicon chip.
QUESTION 6 (20 Marks)
An Operating system (OS) is a software that acts as an interface between the end user and
computer hardware. Every computer must have at least one OS to run other programs. Discuss
any FIVE (5) characteristics or features of an OS
Unit 5.4: features and characteristics of
system software
In order for the computer hardware to be
used, you will require computer software.
The computer software will provide the
detailed instructions which will direct the
computer on what to do.

The system software will control the

access to the hardware. System software is
referred to as operating system. The
operating system can be considered to be
the chief manager of the computer which
enables the system to handle tasks/activities
Memory Management;
Memory will be accessed and made
available because the operating system will
control this. Programs are executed
effectively to speed up processing. Newer
operating systems improve system
performance tremendously.
Processing Tasks;
There are multiple task management
techniques which an operating system
will use to increase the processing speed
such as Multiuser, Multiprocessing,
Multitasking, Multithreading and Real
Time. In Multiuser, there are more than
two users running programs
concurrently. In Multitasking, there will
be more than one program running
concurrently on a system at one given
instance. In Multithreading, there are
different threads of a single program
which will run concurrently.
Networking Capability: Most
operating systems have this function so
computers can connect to each other to
send and receive data. Computer
resources can be shared this way. There
are operating systems specifically
designed for larger servers to
accommodate for the computer
networking environment.
Access to System Resources and
Security; computers handle sensitive
data and this sort of information can
be accessed via the network. The
operating system provides some degree
of high level security against the
unauthorised users. The operating
system will have a logon procedure
which will consist of a username and
password. The operating system might
even impose restrictions to the resources
that a user may access.
File Management; the operating system
will provide storage for users and
protect the files from unauthorised
users. The operating system will keep
track of where information or data is
stored and who can have access.
Question 1 (30 marks)
Cloud computing is a model which is used for processing, storing, software and
other services which will be shared over a network. Elaborate on the three
types of cloud computing services
