At the end of the lesson, it is expected for the

1. identify sources of Local and Oral history;
2. illustrate an interest in Local and Oral history;
3. apply methodology of local and oral history in
writing the history of their local municipalities
where they reside;

of a chosen person, building, site or landmark in
their local community; and

• the study of people, places, factual events, cultural
heritage, genealogy, and folklore, to name a few of
local political units and particular geographical area
• Scope:
 Landscape history
 Geo-political history
 Local culture, indigenous knowledge systems and
practices of a particular group in a geographical
area, folklore, myths, epic, and songs/music.
 Family history, life of a particular individual, etc.

LOCAL HISTORY
• Importance:
 It gives us a holistic view about crucial and
controversial events that took place (or are taking
place) in our local communities and its effect vis-à-
vis to national affairs.
 It paves the way to clear understanding of
historical patterns and their connections with each
other that procures vivid view of history in general.
 Allows us to study national events within the
context of local communities.

 Interview, content analysis for documents, archival
research, archaeological excavations

• the systematic collection of living people’s testimony


about their own experiences. (Park, 2013)
• Scope:
 Geo-political history
 Local culture, indigenous knowledge systems and
practices of a particular group in a geographical
area, folklore, myths, music history, epic, etc.
 Family history, life of a particular individual, etc.

• Importance:
 Helps us understand how individuals and
communities experienced the forces of history.
 Teaches us what has changed and what has
stayed the same over time.
 Preserves for future generations a sound portrait
of who we are in the present and what we

• Sources:
 Eyewitnesses, priests, tribal elders, members of a
particular group.

• Methodology:
 Oral interview, recording (audio-video) but needs
informed consent, data transcription.

• Museum is an important institution that preserves
cultural heritage with the primary intent to collect,
preserve, understand, and exhibit the different relics
and artifacts for a better understanding of the past.
• National Museum Act of 1998 (R.A. No. 8492) – “It is
the policy of the State to pursue and support the
cultural development of the Filipino people, through
the preservation, enrichment and dynamic evolution
of Filipino national culture, based on the principle of
unity in diversity in a climate of free artistic and
intellectual expression.”

• Historical Shrines are national sites or objects
hollowed or honored for their history or association.
These are monuments which serves as reminders of
the rich culture and history of the country.
• R.A. No. 10086 or the Strengthening People’s
Nationalism Through Philippine History Act
 “sites or structures hallowed and revered for their
history or association declared as such by the
National Historical Commission of the Philippines
(NHCP)”

1. Traditional Knowledge – indigenous people have


accumulated knowledge over generations about their
local environment , including plants, animals, and
weather patterns. This knowledge is pass down through
storytelling, observation, and practical experience.

2. Healing Practices – many indigenous communities


have their own unique healing practices that involve the
use of natural remedies, spiritual ceremonies, and

3. Ceremony and Ritual – indigenous people often hold


ceremonies and rituals to mark important events, such

4. Art and Craft – indigenous people have a long history

The Philippines has a predominantly Roman Catholic


population, and many of the religious rites and rituals in
the country are related to Catholicism. However, there
are also other religious traditions and practices that are

indigenous people, as well as Muslim and other minority
religions.

Holy Week – a significant event in the Catholic calendar
and is observed with various religious rites and rituals
throughout the country.
1. Senakulo or Pasyon – reenactment of the passion of
Christ
2. Visita Iglesia – visiting several churches
3. Salubong – meeting of the resurrected Christ and
Virgin Mary on Easter Sunday
4. Procession of the Santo Entierrio – procession of the
Holy Burial

Simbang Gabi – a nine-day novena of masses leading


up to Christmas Eve. It is a tradition that dates back to
the Spanish colonial period and is seen as a way to
prepare for the coming of Christ.

Flores de Mayo – a month-long Catholic festival that


honors the Virgin Mary. It includes daily masses,

Eid al-Fitr – an important Muslim holiday in the
