THE SLOPE OF A LINE
Line is defined as the shortest path between two points, while slope is a
function of the points involved.
𝒚𝟐 − 𝒚𝟏
𝒎=
𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 𝟏
𝒚+𝟑=𝟎
𝟐 +𝒙
a=2
b=1
c=3
Rearranging it in terms of y:
𝒚 =− 𝟐 𝒙 − 𝟑
𝒚 =−𝟐 𝒙 −𝟑
This equation can be graphed in the Cartesian plane by assigning certain
values of x to get a paired value of (x, y).
X -1 0 1 2
Y -1 -3 -5 -7
And plotting each pair, we have
X -1 0 1 2
Y -1 -3 -5 -7
To solve for the slope, we take two ordered pair and substitute to the
equation of the slope. Using P (0, -3) and P (1, -5)
𝒚𝟐 − 𝒚𝟏
𝒎=
𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 𝟏
−𝟓 −(−𝟑)
𝒎=
𝟏 −𝟎
−𝟐
𝒎=
𝟏 𝒎=−𝟐
EQUATION OF A TANGENT LINE
In cases of polynomials which are not linear, or simply those who do not
follows the equation of a line, a different approach is necessary when solving
for their slope.
Since their graphs are curve in nature, they are close to being linear at a certain
point over a very short range. The line that is closest to the graph of the
polynomial at that point is called the "tangent line" and the point is called
"point of tangency“. This is particularly important because the slope of the
polynomial at the specific value of x.
example
Find the equation of the line tangent to the graph of the function at
point (-2, 6)
′
𝒇 ( 𝒙 )= 𝟒 𝒙
example
Using P (-2, 6), substitute the value x= -2 to solve the equation.
′
𝒇 ( 𝒙 )=𝟒 𝒙
′
𝒇 ( 𝒙 )=𝟒(− 𝟐)
′
→ 𝒔𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒆
𝒇 ( 𝒙 ) =− 𝟖
example
Using the Point-Slope Form: where m=slope, we can now solve the
Equation of the tangent line.
𝒚 − 𝒚 𝟏=𝒎 ( 𝒙 − 𝒙 𝟏 ) 𝒚 −𝟔=−𝟖 𝒙 − 𝟏𝟔
𝒚 −𝟔=−𝟖 [ 𝒙 −(− 𝟐) ] 𝒚 =−𝟖 𝒙 −𝟏𝟔 +𝟔
𝒚 −𝟔=−𝟖 ( 𝒙 +𝟐) 𝒚 =−𝟖 𝒙 −𝟏𝟎
