Caring for the

environment
OBJECTIVES
• Define Natural resources and their importance.
• Differentiate between renewable and non- renewable
resources
• Explore how humans have positive and negative
effects on the environment, e.g. loss of species,
protection of habitats.
• Explore a number of ways of caring for the
environment, e.g. recycling, reducing waste, reducing
energy consumption, not littering, encouraging others
to care for the environment.
Objective: Define Natural resources and their importance.

Natural resources
• It is something that is found in nature and can
be used by people.
• Examples: light, air, water, plants, animals,
soil, minerals and fossil fuels.

endless amount.
Renewable Resources
( sustainable resource)

• * oxygen

• * water

• * sunlight (solar energy)

• *wind
Non-renewable
resources
• Fossil fuels such as:

• *Coal

• * oil

• * natural gases
Importance of natural
resources
• It is important for survival like clean air, fresh water
and food from animals and plants.

• To maintain the environmental balance

• Help in production and manufacturing medicine.

• Producing electricity from burning the fossil fuels as

coal.

effect effect
Negative impact
1- pollution:
• Is the introduction of harmful matter or pollutants into
the environment.

• Pollution include land pollution, air pollution and

water pollution.
AIR POLLUTION
It is caused by :
• 1- burning of fossil fuels:
It release pollutants such as smoke and harmful gases
like carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide

• It results in :
Acid rain
when harmful gases of the burning fossil fuels such as
nitogen oxide (NO) and sulpher dioxide( SO2)
dissolve in rainwater, acid rain is formed.
Effect of the acid rain
• Cause death of plants.
As it affect the soil by
reducing the nutritive
Values.
• Marine organism could die due to the changing of
the acidity of water.

• Corrosion of buildings.

POSITIVE CONSEQUENCE
• Reduce the burning of fossil fuels.
• Riding bicycles where possible.

• Use alternative ways for generating electricity

like using wind turbines and solar panels.
• 2- burning of forests:
• The massive burning of trees and bushes
cause smoke and haze that pollute the air.
• It results in :
Haze
It is created when dust, smoke and other dry
particles are released into air.

Water pollution
It is caused by :
• 1- soil erosion:
When the loose soil fall in the nearby ponds ,
rivers and lakes. The water become murky.
• It results in :
reducing of the aquatic palnts as the amount of
sunlight is reduced and this preventing
photosynthesis from taking place
• 2- oil spills:
• It happen when oil tankers leak oil into the
water by accident.
• It results in :
• It affect the sea creatures and also the animals
that swim as they will be coated with thick
layer that reduce the ability to fly and move.
3- littering
• Throwing human
Garbage and factory littering
cause water pollution

• Positive consequence

• *Stop littering.
• *Use biodegradable materials
( these are materials which contain
organic material in it and can be broken
down into carbon dioxide, water and many
simple material by microorganism and other living
thing .
4- presence of heavy metals in water
• Heavy metals are like mercury, lead and arsenic.
• All these metals are toxic and harmful.
• This polluted water can cause cancer, organs
failure and nervous damage.

• 2- Deforestation :
• Destruction of forests in order to increase land
space for using in farming and building.
• Trees are also cut down to meet the world
demand for wood and paper ,the removal of
large numbers of trees cause negative impacts
on the environment.
What is deforestation?
2VQ
Is caused by:
• A) quarrying:
• It is removing of layers and
• digging in the underground to
• reach the underground layer to get rocks and minerals.
• It results in:
• Climate changes:
• Due to the decrease of the number of the trees and
photosynthesis and hence large amount of carbon dioxide .
• The carbon dioxide is a green house gas that trap heat in the
Earth’s atmosphere.
Is caused by:
B) clearing land for development
• The tracts of land have to be cleared to lay the
foundations of building . It damage the
environment and need large amount of energy.
• It result in:
• Loss of habitats:
Because animal cannot
survive in a different habitat
so they may extinct.
• Soil erosion :
It happened cause when there are no plant to
hold the soil together with root, also more soil
is lost as rain can wash away large amount of
soil into the nearby water. This prevent the
aquatic plants from getting sunlight for
photosynthesis. They will die affecting
animals further down the food chain.

Global warming
• When the sun heat the Earth, some heat is
trapped by the atmosphere and other are
reflected back to space. This trapping of heat
known as the green house effect.

• When toooooo much is trapped in Earth’s
atmosphere global warming is set. that cause
a continues rise in the average temperature
in the Earth’s atmosphere.
• When the fossil fuels are burnt gases such as
carbon dioxide are released which is known as
green house gases it trap heat from the sun.
• Other examples of green house gases such as
methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).
• It results in :
• It cause dramatic climate changes such as
droughts and floods that is caused from the
sea level rises.
• Melting the ice caps and glacial ice that cause
the animals not able to survive.
• Changing the climate cause crop failure as
each plant need a specific climate to grow.
• Ozone layer depletion
