Computer Based Design and Testing

This document discusses how circuit simulation software allows designers to build and test circuits virtually before physical implementation. It covers SPICE simulation, features of simulators like adding test points and controls, generating PCB layouts and bills of materials, and limitations of simulation like modeling approximations and environmental factors not captured.

Computer Based Design and Testing

In this presentation you will:

 see how circuits can be simulated with software
 recognise some of the advantages and limitations of simulation software

increasingly difficult.

SPICE

SPICE stands for Simulation

Program with Integrated Circuit
Emphasis. It is an open source
program that calculates the
operation of a circuit.

It was developed at the

Electronics Research Laboratory Laurence Nagel developed
of the University of California SPICE in the early 1970s
and first presented in 1973.

It became widely adopted LTSpice IV – Linear Technologies

as a standard and many
companies still produce
SPICE compatible
simulation software.

SPICE

One advantage of
SPICE is that new
components can be
added by including
their model.

The model is
simply a text

file that contains
the parameters of
the component.

Once a model is
included, it can be
added to circuits and
simulated alongside
other components.

“Component library files for use with SPICE include images of component
symbols and performance graphs.”
Is this statement true or false?

False

Component library files are simple text documents that contain the
parameters of a component.

Simulators

There are many

simulation software
packages but they often
contain similar features.

Circuits can be
built using ideal
or real models of
the components.

Inputs and outputs

can be controlled
and observed.

Simulators

The circuit can be

tested and monitored
by adding test points.

Oscilloscopes and
logic monitors can
be added.

Parameters such as
voltage supplies or
resistances can be
altered with no
danger to the user or
any real components.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Routing

Once a circuit has

been designed and
tested, some software
will help with producing
the design of the PCB.

There are certain

industry standard file
formats that are used
by PCB manufacturers.

Software that can output these

file types will save a designer
time in communicating circuit
designs to a manufacturer.

The Gerber file format is

the most commonly used,
but there are others such
as DXF and ODB++. Next >
BOM

If the cost of components is

added to the library of the
simulation software, it can
produce a bill of materials,
or BOM, automatically.

This can help a circuit

designer to monitor
materials and costs.

Next >
Simulation Limitations

Although modern
simulation software is very
powerful, it is still based
on mathematical models.

Some of these models rely

on algorithms that use
approximations or calculate
values by iteration.

This means that the simulation

will not be a perfectly reliable
representation of what will
happen in the real world.

It is still necessary to build

and test a working prototype
before sending a product to The US Army

Simulation Limitations

When a prototype is produced,

the design can be tested
further against problems not
apparent in the simulation.
