PLANT LAYOUT

Definitions of Plant Layout

 A method of organizing the elements of production process in

which similar processes and functions are grouped together.
 Plant Layout is the physical arrangement of equipment and
facilities within a plant.
 It’s the organization of physical facilities like machinery,
equipment & the allocation of space for the various activities of
the plant & personnel working in the plant.
 It accommodate future expansion and achieve economy in
operations.
Importance
 Is the fundamental of every organization and enterprise.

 Kitchen, Retailers, Offices, service organization and all the

enterprises have a specific layout.

 Previously Layout were based on intuition, experience and

judgement. With the complexities and competition now scientific
methods are used.

 Layout comes in picture after the location has been finalized.

How it works?

 The development of good layout depends on decisions already

taken on location, capacity, facility, manufacturing method and
material handking techniques.

 Deals with government rules & regulations ( Municipal

coporation/
Labour law & rules.

 Safety of employees/visitors/ vendors in prime concern.

Factors to be considered in Plant layout

1. Building & Structure :Depends on type of production system.

2. Men : Number of people . Unskilled /skilled ,Physic of workers.

3. Machines : General Purpose requires less space, whereas Large in

size, complicated, high level of automation.

4. Material : Nature of material like hazardous & non hazardous,

form of material, Quantity of material to be handled.
Contd…

 Movement : Movement of people / machines/ cranes (length &

frequency)

 Purpose of movement ( with load/without load/Quantity of load).

 Waiting Time : Cycle time for completing each activity.

 Intermittent- Uncertain & High, continuous defined & low

Different Plant Layout

 If the design of the plant layouts are not given great

consideration, inefficiencies could set in during operations. In
operations management,Four main designs of layout exist. These
plany layout include :
 Product layout
 Process layout
 Fixed product layout and lastly
 Cellular layout
Advantages

 Low cost of material handling, due to straight and short route and
absence of backtracking.
 Smooth and uninterrupted operations.
 Continuous flow of work.
 Optimum use of floor space.
 Less congestion of work in the process.
 Shorter processing time or quicker output.
Disadvatanges

 High initial capital investment in special purpose machine.

 Heavy overhead charges
 Breakdown of one machine will hamper the whole production
process.
 Lesser flexibility as specially laid out for particular product.
