What is
TRANSPORTATION?
TRANSPORTATION
• the movement of goods
and persons from place to
place and the various
means by which such
movement is
accomplished.
MODES OF TRANSPORTATION
• Roadways are the modes
of transportation on land.
This system includes
streets, feeder roads, and
village roads, catering for
a wide range of vehicles
and pedestrians along with
the modern highway
system.
MODES OF TRANSPORTATION
• Waterways. This mode of
transportation includes oceans,
rivers, canals, and lakes for the
movement of ships and boats. In
this system ships and boats are
used to transport men and
materials. Transportation by this
system is possible between the
ports on the sea route or along the
rivers or canals where ever inland
navigation facilities are available.
MODES OF TRANSPORTATION
• Aircraft and helicopters use the
airways. The Air system of
transportation is the fastest and
provides more comfort apart
from saving time in
transportation men and
material, but is costliest among
all the four systems mentioned
above.
MODES OF TRANSPORTATION
• Railways are steel tracks laid
on the ground, over which the
trains move. Railways have
been developed both for long as
well as for short distances and
for urban travel. Transportation
by railway system is
advantageous for longer
distances.
MODES OF TRANSPORTATION
• Pipeline Transport.
This mode of transportation
involves the use of hollow
pipes in the transportation of
water, crude oil, (petroleum)
and gas. This system of
transportation is safer than
using tankers or trailers in
the transportation of these
liquids.
OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORTATION
• Pipeline Transport
• Animal-Powered Transport
• Human-Powered Transport
• Spaceflight
• Cable Transport
History of Philippine Railways
• The first railroad in the Philippines was inaugurated on
Nov. 24, 1892, nearly two decades after King Alfonso XII
of Spain issued a decree for the establishment of a
railroad system in Luzon.
• Construction of the railroad began in 1888. The line
covered 195 kilometers from Manila to Dagupan in
Pangasinan.
History of Philippine Railways
• The line was founded as Ferrocarril de Manila-Dagupan. It
became Manila Railroad Co. (MRRCo) during the American
colonial rule.
• From Manila Central Station in Tutuban, construction moved
northward to Tayuman, ending in Dagupan. The Americans
subsequently built a new line from Bulacan to Cabanatuan,
Nueva Ecija, in 1902.
• Shortly after, the rail line was expanded to La Union in the north
and Albay in the south.
History of Philippine Railways
• In 1964, by virtue of Republic Act No. 4156, MRRCo
became Philippine National Railways (PNR), a
government-owned corporation.
• PNR was once Luzon’s premier railroad operator, with
over 797 km of tracks linking La Union to Bicol, but
decades of neglect, mismanagement and damage from
natural calamities gradually reduced its coverage.
The Role of Railway System in
Transportation
• It helps integrate fragmented markets and thereby
stimulate the emergence of a modern market economy.
• It connects industrial production centers with markets as
well as sources of raw material and thereby facilitates
industrial development.
• It links agricultural production centers with distant
markets as well as sources of essential inputs, thereby
promoting rapid agricultural growth.
The Role of Railway System in
Transportation
• It provides rapid, reliable, and cost-effective bulk
transportation to the energy sector; for example, to move
coal from the coalfield to power plants and petroleum
products from refineries to consumption centers.
• It links people with places, enabling large-scale, rapid,
and low-cost movement of people across the length and
breadth of the country.
The Role of Railway System in
Transportation
• In the process, Indian Railways has become a symbol of
national integration and a strategic instrument for
enhancing our defense preparedness.
• Railways make it possible to conduct multifarious
activities like business, sightseeing, pilgrimage along with
transportation of goods.
• It is suitable for long distance travel.
• Plays an important role in national integration.
The Role of Railway System in
Transportation
• Railways bind the economic life of the country.
• It accelerates the development of the industry and
agriculture.
• Today the railways have become more important than all
other means of transport put together.
Advantages and Disadvantages of
Railway System
Advantages of Rail Transportation
• Cost Effective
• More environmentally friendly
• Covers large areas
• Capable of hauling heavy loads
• Trains are generally more reliable
• Freight by rail is efficient
• Provides employment opportunities
Disadvantages of Rail Transportation
• Huge Capital Outlay
• Lack of Flexibility
• Lack of Door to Door Service
• Unsuitable for Short Distance and Small Loads
• No rail service / limited service in rural or hilly areas
• Under-utilised Capacity
• Significant contributor of sound and air pollution
Benefits
• Modern trains reach high speeds. Over long distances,
only air transport is faster.
• It is the most reliable mode of transport because it does
not depend on traffic and is the least affected by bad
weather.
• It can carry large amounts of cargo in terms of volume
and weight. A single rail convoy can carry the equivalent
of 80 trucks. In addition, its load capacity is elastic, as
you can add or remove wagons easily and quickly.
• Rail transport is best for moving heavy and bulky goods

goods over long distances. A variety of platforms are
available for this purpose, swap bodies, and wagons
suitable for almost any type of load.
Benefits
• It has a lower environmental impact. Especially electric
trains.
• It is a well-organized, safe, uniform, and regular
service, with fixed routes and pre-established
timetables.
Benefits
• It is cheaper than other models of transport.
• Rail is the safest form of transport. Accident rates and
faults when compared to other means of transport are
minimal and usually solved in a short time
