Spreadsheets

Purpose of a Spreadsheet

A spreadsheet is a table consisting of cells (columns,


row locations) that hold accounting or financial data
and simulates the traditional spreadsheet. It captures,
displays and manipulates data.
Examples of Spreadsheet Software
Microsoft Excel – We will be using this software.
Google Sheets – We will use this software as a backup.
Lotus
Apache OpenOffice Calc.
Apple Numbers.
Smartsheet.
Lotus Symphony
Common features of a Spreadsheet
Workbook

This is a spreadsheet file.


It contains at least one
worksheet and may
contain several
worksheets.
Worksheet

This is a single page in a


spreadsheet file.
Column
Labelled A,B,C ,…
horizontally. It goes
from top to bottom.
Row
Numbered 1,2,3,…
vertically. It goes from
left to right.
Cell
The intersection of a
column and a row.
Cell address / Cell reference

This is the combination of a


column letter and a row number
(e.g. C5)
Range

This identifies a
rectangular block of cells
in a worksheet.
e.g.(D6:G12)
Label

This is text entered


into a cell that explains
the contents of other
cells.
Value

This is data entered into


a cell used for
calculations.
Formula
This carries out
calculations, using the
values held in one or
more cells in a
worksheet, and displays
the result in another
cell.
Function

This is used to carry


out complex
calculations.
Exercise
(1) Create a spreadsheet with the following labels:
 Student Name
 Address
 Age
 Telephone Number

(2) Create fifteen (15) rows of data under each label.
