Elimination

The method of elimination is often preferred over

substitution. In a system of two linear equations
in two variables, the equations can be combined.

It is necessary to check if there are terms that can

be eliminated.
Solving
Systems of
Equations
{ x - 3y = 7 1
Elimination Solve:
2x + 3y = 5 2
Example 1
Determine the terms that can be eliminated.

x - 3y = 7 1
+) 2x + 3y = 5 2 (Eliminating -3y and 3y
by addition)
3x = 12
3 3
Solving x = 4
(Dividing both sides by 3)
Systems of
Equations
{ x - 3y = 7 1
Elimination Solve:
2x + 3y = 5 2
Example 1
Use any of the equations to solve for y
substituting x with 4.
x - 3y = 7 1 (Using equation 1)
4 - 3y = 7
- 3y = 3 (Subtracting 4 from both sides
of the equation)
-3 -3
Solving y = -1
(Dividing both sides of the
equation by 3)
Systems of
Equations Solution: ( 4, -1 )
{ 3x + y = 9 1
Elimination Solve:
4x - 2y = 2 2
Example 2
Determine the terms that can be eliminated.
2 ( 3x + y = 9 ) 2 1
4x - 2y = 2 2

6x + 2y = 18 (Multiplying equation by1

+) 4x - 2y = 2 2)

10x = 20 (Eliminating 2y and -2y

Solving 10 10
by addition)
Systems of (Dividing both sides by 10)
x = 2
Equations
{ 3x + y = 9 1
Elimination Solve:
4x - 2y = 2 2
Example 2
Solve for y. Use either equation or
1 2 .

3x + y = 9 1 (Substituting 2 to x )
3(2) + y = 9
6 + y = 9
y = 3 (Subtracting 6 from both sides
of the equation)
Solving
Systems of
Equations Solution: ( 2, 3 )
{ -3x + 2y = -7 1
Elimination Solve:
5x - 3y = 11 2
Example 3
Determine the terms that can be eliminated.
3 ( -3x + 2y = -7 ) 3 1
2 ( 5x - 3y = 11 ) 2 2

5x - 3y = 11 2 (Substituting 1 to x )
5(1) - 3y = 11
5 - 3y = 11
- 3y = 6 (Subtracting 5 from both sides
of the equation)
