Parallel Structure

Parallel Structure
• means using the same construction for sentence elements that are the same in
functions
• it refers to balancing similar words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. Therefore,
parallelism can be through WORDS, PHRASES, OR CLAUSES in a sentence.
• Parallelism is crucial in lists, comparisons, and series to maintain coherence and
effectiveness in writing.
Below are three rules to consider when checking for Parallel
Structure in your writing:
1. Parallel Structure should be used when elements are joined by coordinating
conjunctions.
Incorrect: I am allergic to the dog's hair and how it smells.
Correct: I am allergic to the dog's hair and smell.

Note: Notice the elements being joined by the conjunction, they are now both in a
form of noun. They have the same structure unlike the first one.

Remember that there are different kinds of conjunction, it could be

coordinating, correlative, or comparative conjunction.
2. Parallel Structure should be used when writing elements in the form of a list or a
series.
Incorrect: The clas valued respect, honesty, and being on time in a teacher.
Correct: The class valued respect, honesty, and promptness in a teacher.

Note: Notice the difference, all the elements are in a noun form (respect & honesty)
except for the third one which is literally different in structure. Therefore you should
change the element that differs and apply the pattern (all are in a noun form).
3. Parallel Structure should be used when comparing or contrasting elements (A is better
than B or X is less than Y):
Incorrect: James enjoys reading more than to write.
Correct: Juan enjoys reading more than writing.

Note: As what you see in the first sentence, the elements are not parallel since the
first element is in ferund form, and the other is infinitive verb. Therefore to make it parallel,
choose only 1 grammatical form that serves as your pattern. So that all elements now are
in parallel because elements (reading & writing) are now in gerund form..
NOTE: If the sentence includes time signals that indicate the action
happening at different time or will happen in the future, DISREGARD THIS
RULE.
Example:
Edna is an industrious student, an obedient daughter, and a loyal friend.

Correlative Conjuction and a Parallel Structure
Correlative Conjunctions
• Either- or Neither-nor
• Not only- but (also) Both- and

Example:
Incorrect: The mall requires not only wearing face masks but also face shields.
Correct: The mall requires not only face masks but also face shields.
Note:
Notice the first sentence above, after the conjunction (not only & but also) the elements
are not in the same structure as the first one has the verb "wearing" before the faces
masks, but the other one has only "faceshields", therefore they are not parallel. So you
have to change either to omit or add something to get the same pattern.
Note:
To spot the elements and know if the sentence is parallel or not, find where
the conjunction is and you will notice the elements that are being joined by it.
Know that there are different kinds of conjunction namely:
• Coordinating (and, both, but, etc.),
• Correlative (either-or; both-and; neither-nor, etc.)
In a ½ sheet of paper, please copy and answer the following questions. If the sentence
is not parallel, write the correct way by using parallelism.
