CONTEMPORARY

WORLD
WITH THESE REALITIES/EXAMPLES,
IS GLOBALIZATION HAPPENING IN
TODAY’S WORLD?
WHAT IS
GLOBALIZATION?
GLOBALIZATION:

 Thomas Larsson (2001): “the process of world

shrinkage, of distances getting shorter, things
moving closer. It pertains to the increasing
ease with which somebody on one side of the
world can interact...”

WHY AND HOW?

GLOBALIZATION
 Globalize: creation of international network of
economic systems where there is the establishment
of interdependence and interconnectedness
between the varied socio-cultural, economic, and
political components of the world

interdependence relying on each other is a necessity

Increased interconnectedness opening of
international borders allowing flows of goods,
services, finance, people, and ideas
“global age”
(Albrow,
Globalization: 1996)
Global alliance
and dependence
in terms of Global
business, network
political,
economic, and
cultural practices Global village
(Marshall
McLuhan)
Is globalization a reality that
has been only present in
today’s society? Or
globalization has been
already present in the past?
FourGeneral
Approaches to Dating
Globalization

When did globalization

begin?
 1.It started in 1989 with the
collapsed of communism and
the Fall of Soviet Union that
ended the Cold War

 Communism (no to private

ownership) vs. Capitalism
(private ownership)
 2.It started in 19th century with the
start of Industrial Revolution with
the increase of science, production,
and trade all over the world for
materials
 (coal
and iron machines and
means of production
 3.Globalization starts with
modernity of capitalism 500 years
ago in the 16th century when Europe
dominated the trade and the Silk
Road was used and the slave trade
and whatnot
 4.
Globalization started
thousand of years ago when
people started interacting with
other tribes and groups of
people and traded items for
other goods they needed
METAPHOR WHICH BEST DESCRIBES GLOBALIZATION IS
LIQUIDITY

 Solid: Barriers that make difficult the movement of

things.
 Natural (geography, bodies of water, land itself)
 man-made (policies, UNCLOS, West Philippine Sea caused the
difficulty of our fishermen)
METAPHOR WHICH BEST DESCRIBES GLOBALIZATION IS
LIQUIDITY

 Liquid: increasing ease of movement of people, things,

info, and places in the contemporary world.
 Space and time are crucial elements of globalization. (e.g.
global finance, stocks are a matter of seconds)
 Movement is difficult to stop (e.g. once viral, it’s difficult to
stop)
 DIFFICULTY TO REGULATE TRANSACTIONS AND MOVEMENTS
METAPHOR WHICH BEST DESCRIBES
GLOBALIZATION IS LIQUIDITY

 Flows are the movement of people,

things, places, and information brought
about by the growing “porosity” of global
limitations.
 e.g. food such as ramen, sushi, fries, burger
 global financial systems- financial crisis of one
country affects another,
 Immigrants
 virtual flow of legal and illegal information
such as pornography
Theories of Globalization see it as a process of increasing:

1. Homogeneity
Standard?
 Increasing sameness in the world as cultural inputs, economic
factors, and political orientations of societies expand to create
common practices, same economies, and similar forms of
government
 Often refers to cultural imperialism where one culture influences
other cultures
 E.g. Christianity by the Spaniards, Americanization (images,
behavior), in terms of economy, the spread of neoliberalism
Theories of Globalization see it as a
process of increasing:

2. Heterogeneity
 Creation of various cultural practices, new economies,
and political groups because of the interaction of
elements from different societies in the world
 Preserving or strengthening cultural identity (ex.
Bollywood vs Hollywood, Kpop vs American Pop)
