1. A sailor in a small sailboat encounters shifting winds. She sails 2.00km east,
then 3.50km southeast, and then an additional distance in an unknown
direction. Her final position is 5.80km directly east of the starting point.
2. Given two vectors:
A = 4.00i + 3.00j
B = 5.00i – 2.00j
a. find the magnitude of each vector;
b. write an expression for the vector sum A + B using unit vectors;
c. find the magnitude and direction of the vector sum A + B;
d. write an expression for the vector difference A – B using unit vectors;
e. find the magnitude and direction of the vector difference A – B.
3. a. From the given diagram, write each vector in
terms of unit vectors i and j;
b. Use unit vectors to express vector C, where
C = 3.00A – 4.00B
c. Find the magnitude and direction of C.
4. From the given two vectors:
A = 4.00i + 3.00j
B = 5.00i – 2.00j
a. Find the scalar product .
b. What is the angle between the two vectors.
5. From the given diagram:
a. Find the scalar product
b. Find AxB
c. Find BxA
6. You are given vectors A = 5.0i – 6.5j and B = -3.5i +7.0j. A third vector C
lies in the xy plane. Vector C is perpendicular to vector A , and the scalar
product of C with B is 15. From this information, find the components of
vector C.
7. You are given vectors A = 5.0i – 6.5j and B = -3.5i + 7.0j. A third vector C lies in the xy-
plane. Vector C is perpendicular to vector A, and the scalar product of C with B is 15,
from this information find the components of vector C.
8. Two vectors A and B have magnitude A = 3.00 and B = 3.00. Their vector product
AxB = -5.00k + 2.00i .
What is the angle between A and B?
9. (a) Prove that for any three vectors A, B, and C, A.(B x C) = (A xB ).C
(b) Calculate (A xB ).C for the three vectors A with magnitude A = 5.00 and angle θA =
26.0o measured in the sense from + x-axis toward the +y-axis, vector B with B = 4.00
and θB = 63.0o and C with magnitude 6.00 in the +z-direction. Vectors A and B are in
the xy-plane
