REVIEW!!!

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Animal cells generate ATP in aerobic respiration, which
consumes O2 and generated CO2 as a waste product.
RESPIRATION
Respiration is the physical movement of air into and out of the body. Respiration is the
act of exchanging gases. External respiration is gas exchange between an organism’s
body and its environment; internal respiration is gas exchange between tissue cells and
the bloodstream.
Respiration is the movement of air or dissolved gases into and out of the
lungs or movement of oxygen from the outside environment to the cells
within tissues, and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction.
The parts of the respiratory
system that are in charge of
supplying oxygen are the nose,
nasal passageways, windpipe,
lungs, and diaphragm.
In the nose and nasal passages, the
entering air is made warm, damp, and
clean of unknown particles. Next, the
air moves down through the trachea,
bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
PARTS AND FUNCTIONS
TRACHEA
 connects the
throat to the
lungs.
 Serves as
passageway for
air.
BRONCHI
 In the chest, the
trachea is divided
into two tubes
called the bronchi.
 Each of these tubes
leads to one of the
two lungs.
 Also serves as air
passageway.
BRONCHIOLES
 BRONCHI tubes are
divided into smaller
tubes called the
bronchioles that end
in millions of tiny
balloon-like air sacs
which are called
alveoli.
ALVEOLI
 In the alveoli, oxygen is
transferred to the blood.
Blood carries oxygen to all
parts of our body. At the
same time carbon dioxide is
transferred from the blood to
the alveoli. When we
breathe out, our body gets
rid of carbon dioxide.
DIAPHRAGM
 A special muscle that helps
our lungs to move.
LUNGS
 One of the usually paired
compound saccular
thoracic organs that
constitute the basic
respiratory organs of an
air-breathing vertebrate.
