A Very Brief History of Fabric (Cloth)


Humans have been making fabric for about 50,000

years

Few examples from history because fabric wears out

or rots.

Materials used by prehistoric people: animal skins,

fur, leather, plant fibres and tree bark

Very labour intensive to weave a fabric Until the Industrial Revolution (late 1700s mid

1800s) fabric was expensive because it took so much work to make it.
Result: Fabric: Used and reused until nothing left

Rag Rugs
Rugs/mats have been made for 1000s of years Anything that can be made into a yarn or string can be

used to create a rug


In the past, people made rag rugs because they didnt

have much money


Today, people make rag rugs for various reasons:

instead of sending it to a dump)
