Rectifier

 A rectifier is an electrical component

that converts alternating current (AC) to
direct current (DC). A rectifier is
analogous to a one-way valve that allows
an electrical current to flow in only one
direction. The process of converting AC
current to DC current is known as
rectification.
The single-phase bridge rectifier shown in Figure 3 is connected to a 120 V,
60 Hz source. If the load draws a current of 36A. Calculate the following:

a)The load resistance [2 mark]

b)The PIV across the diodes [1mark]
c)The inductance of the choke so that the peak-to-peak ripple is about 5 percent of
the dc current [3 marks]
d) The peak-to-peak voltage ripple across the choke [1mark]
The peak-to-peak current ripple in Ampere [1mark]
A single-phase diode bridge rectifier with resistive load is shown in
Figure 2. The DC voltage across the 3 Ω resistive load is 230 V, at a
frequency of 100Hz.

Calculate:
i)The AC source voltage, E and its frequency [3 marks]
ii)The peak to peak current ripple (%), if a 0.15 H inductor is connected in series with
the load to smooth the output current. [4 marks]
iii)The average current carried by each diode I. [2 marks]
iv) The PIV across the diode [1 mark]
The single-phase transformer shown in Figure 2 is connected to a single
phase bridge rectifier that produces an output DC voltage of 240 V.

R = 2.5 Ω

If a 400 V, 60 Hz feeder is available, calculate the following:

i) The voltage at the secondary side of the transformer, Vs [2 marks]

ii)The average current carried by each diode [3 marks]
iii)The frequency of the output voltage [1 mark]
Iv)The peak-to-peak current ripple if a 0.1H inductor is connected in series with the
load [4 marks]
