Email, Internet, Virus Protection


Email
 Email refers to electronic mail. It is an electronic message
transmitted over a network from one user to another. The
message (data) can be text, graphics, audio, video ,
documents, etc. which can be sent to single or multiple users
at a time.
 Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store messages.
 It contains two parts separated by @symbol, where the first
part is username and second part is domain name.
Example: [email protected]
Uses of Email
1. Secure information exchange: To exchange information i.e., text as well
as attachments such as audio, video, graphics, documents quickly and
securely among individual or group of people.

2. Storage and record keeping: Email services come with huge storage
capacity and built in record of sent and received mails. Gmail provides
15GB of free storage to its users.

3. Group work: Students, office colleagues, project members, business


associates uses email facilities to work in a group. It provides a feature of
group email which enables a message to be transmitted to multiple
recipients at a time.

4. Communication: The easy accessibility of internet today has resulted


email replace telephones and letters for communication.
Advantages of Email
 It is cheaper, easier and faster way of exchanging information.
 It allows attachment of different files such as audio, video,
pictures, documents, etc
 Email allows message to be transmitted to multiple recipients
at a same time.
 Huge storage capacity.
 The mails are stored in a database. We can also search by
sender name, date, subject or put into separate mailboxes.

 Lack of Personal Touch
 Misdirection
 Junk
 No response

Internet
 Internet is a very popular term today as you can see
its application in almost all the areas from home,
schools, hospitals, hotels, business, etc. Internet
refers to the interconnection of networks that links
together millions of computers on a single network to
provide a global communication system. It is
considered network of networks.

URL
 URL refers to Uniform Resource Locator also known as internet address
or web address is the location of a specific website, page or file on the
internet. It contains the domain name of a site such as
www.facebook.com and any directories and files that you’re trying to
open. They are the website addresses you enter into the address bar of
your browser. Example: http://www.xyz.com.
 Some of the domain name types are listed below:

WWW
 WWW stand for World Wide Web. It is also known as web is
a collection of websites or web pages. It stored in web servers
and connected to local computers through internet. These
websites contain hypertext, simple text, images, audios,
videos, etc. It is an interconnected system of public webpages
accessible through the Internet.
HTTP
 HTTP stand for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. It refers to a set
of rules or procedures for transmitting data between the
different devices in the same network. It allows connected
devices to communicate with each other. It is used to access
the data on WWW.

Virus
 Computer virus is a malicious software program loaded onto a
user’s computer without the user’s knowledge and performs
malicious action. Malicious software refers to the software
that is intentionally designed to harm the system. All
computer viruses are man-made, hackers create viruses to
infect vulnerable systems. They are capable of self
replicating, inserting itself onto other programs or files
infecting them in the process.
 Some example of computer virus are: CryptoLocker,
ILOVEYOU, Slammer, MyDoom, etc.
Ways of virus infection
 Opening links or attachments with malicious code
from unknown senders.
 Clicking on malicious online ads.
 Use of infected flash drive, floppy disks.
 Social media are the new medium for virus transfer.
 Insecure download from untrustworthy sites.
Virus Protection Mechanism
 Protect your computer with he updated malicious software
removal tools such as antivirus or anti-malware software,
perform regular scanning of your computer. Always scan flash
drives before use.
 Some of the popular antivirus software are Norton, AVG,
Kaspersky, etc. Donot use open/free Wi-Fi especially when
you are in public place like cofee shop, park, airport, etc.
Always keep your software upto date, better enable automatic
updates.
