Kingdom Fungi
the marvellous world of living
organisms

the fungi kingdom

what is the meaning of the fungi kingdom?
INTRODUCTION
• the Kingdom Fungi is a diverse group of eukaryotic
organisms that includes microorganisms such as
mushrooms, yeasts and moulds, as well as the more
familiar mushrooms.
• they are distinct from plants, animals, and bacteria,
forming their own unique kingdom in the classification
system.
the structure of fungi

1. almost all have a filamentous structure except

the yeast cells.
2. they can be either single-celled or multicellular
organisms.
3. consist of long thread-like structures known as
hyphae, they together form a mesh-like structure
called mycelium.
4. they possess a cell wall which is made up of
chitin and polysaccharides.
5. the cell wall comprises a protoplast, which is
differentiated into other cell parts
6. the nucleus is dense and clear

characteristics and
diversity
what is so special about fungi?
the characteristics of fungi
• eukaryotic, non-vascular, non-motile, and
heterotrophic organisms
• they lack chlorophyll and cannot perform
photosynthesis
• they store food as starch
• they reproduce through spores due to the lack of
embryonic stage
• they exhibit the phenomenon of alternation of
generation.
• biosynthesis of chitin occurs in it.
• they have a small nuclei
fungi diversity

1. there are over 100,000 known species but

estimated to be millions more.
2. examples: mushrooms, puffballs, moulds,
yeast : can be found in various habitats: soil,
water, air, and within other organisms
3. they can be classified on different modes :
 based on mode of nutrition or spore

what are the threats of fungi?
the threats of fungi

while fungi bring many benefits, they can also pose threats :

● some cause devastating crop diseases, resulting in

substantial economic losses.

● they cause fungal infections, which can affect humans,

killing more than 1.5 million people every year, causing
diseases such as athlete's foot or even more severe
conditions.

● invasive fungal species can harm ecosystems and native

species, posing environmental threats.
