NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
QUARTER 3
The concepts of normal distribution are
usually seen in business, economics, medicine,
engineering, education, psychology, and
basically, in all disciplines.
In order to use the concepts of normal
distribution, each of the values of a given data
are assumed to be transformed to standard
scores. From this, a z-table is used to determine
the fraction values that lie below, above a given
value or between two values.
EXAMPLE 1
The scores of a group of students in a standardized test are
normally distributed with a mean of 60 and standard deviation of
8. Answer the following:
a. How many percent of the students got below 72?
b. What part of the group scored between 58 and 76?
c. If there were 250 students who took the test, about how many
students scored higher than 64?
SOLUTION:
Referring to the z-table, the area
below z=1.5 is 0.9332. Therefore,
a. about 93.32% of the group got
12 below 72.

Thus, about 57.59% of the group got a score between 58and 76.
SOLUTION:

1- 0.6915= 0.3085
Since there were 250 students who took the test, about (250)
(0.3085) = 77.125 or 77 students got a score higher than 64.
EXAMPLE 2
Look at the body of the z- table to find the value 0.95, this means that 0.05 or
5% are above of this. From the table, the value 0.9505 corresponds to 1.65
( intersection of 1.6 and 0.05). The score 1.65 above is :
a. ( 1.65 ) ( 12 )= 𝑥 −285
(19.8)=𝑥 − 285
19.8+ 285= 𝑥
𝑥=304.8 𝑜𝑟 305
There are at least 305 examinee who can be admitted to the university.
PERFORMANCE TASK Answer the given problem.
b. What percent of the discharges are between 7.6 ounces and 8.1
ounces?
