Solving Problems Involving Triangle Similarity and

Right Triangles

1. Solves problems that involve triangle similarity and right triangles.

In the language of similarity, the following are very significant steps in
solving its problems:
i. Understand: What are the given data of the problem? Or What are
the required data?
ii. Plan: What is your plan in solving the given problem? Or How would
you solve the problem?
iii. Solve: What theorem will be used to solve the problem?
iv. Check: To check that the obtained value is correct.
Example: 1.) The flagpole cast a shadow 14.5m at the same time that a person
1.8m tall casts a shadow 2.5m long. Find the height of the flagpole.
1. what is ask on the problem.
2. Determine the given.
3. Analyze . Set the proportion
4.Solve
1. Find the height of the flag pole
2. Given:
let :F s shadow)
Ps= 2.5 m(
F h =h ( height of the flag pole)
Ph
3.
F h = Fs
P h PS
h =14.5
1.8 2.5
2.5h=(14.5) (1.8)
2.5H= 26.1
2. 5 2. 5
H= 10.44 m
10.44m is the height of the flagpole
1.You’re locked out of your house and the only open window is on the
second floor, 25 feet above the ground. You need to borrow a ladder
from one of your neighbors. There’s a blush along the edge of the
house, so you’ll have to place the ladder 10 feet from the house. What
length of ladder do you need to reach the window?
The Pythagorean Theorem and Ladders

1. You’re locked out of your house and the only open window is on the second
floor, 25 feet above the ground. You need to borrow a ladder from one of
your neighbors. There’s a blush along the edge of the house, so you’ll have
to place the ladder 10 feet from the house. What length of ladder do you
need to reach the window?
1. Ask: ladder’s length
2. Given: sides-25 ft. & 10 ft.
3. Pythagorean theorem ( c 2=a 2+b 2)
c 2 = 252 + 102
c 2 =625+100
c 2 = 725
c=
c=26.92 or 27 ft.
Act.4.___.please answer slide8 ,10,13&14.
2.CJ is 5 feet tall and casts a 7-foot shadow. At
the same time, a tree casts a 14-foot shadow.
The triangles formed are similar. Find the height
of the tree.
Dilation: Reducing or Enlarging Objects
• A dilation is a transformation in which a figure is enlarged or reduced
with respect to a fixed point C called the center of dilation and a scale
factor k, which is the ratio of the lengths of the corresponding sides of
the image and the preimage.
• When the scale factor k > 1, a dilation is an enlargement. When 0 < k
< 1, a dilation is a reduction.
Find the scale factor of the dilation. Then tell whether the dilation is a
reduction or an enlargement.
