LESSON THREE
Audio Information and Media
Through audio and sound we can visualize the information
that is received in our brain. Sound stimulates our
imagination and today it brings few uses in our day to day
living.
Audio is a sound within the range of human hearing
Audio is relating to or employed in the transmission, reception or
reproduction of sound.
Reception - the action or process of receiving something sent,
given, or inflicted
Transmission - the action or process of transmitting something or
the state of being transmitted.
Types and Categories of Audio Information
1. Radio Broadcast - live or recorded audio sent through
radio waves to reach a wide audience.
2. Music - vocal and/or instrumental sounds combined in
such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and
expression of emotion. It is composed and performed for
many purposes, ranging from aesthetic pleasure,
religious or ceremonial purposes, or as an entertainment
product.
Types and Categories of Audio Information
3. Sound Recording - recording of an interview, meeting, or
any sound from the environment.
4. Sound Clips/Effects - any sound, other than music or
speech, artificially reproduced to create an effect in a
dramatic presentation, as the sound of a storm or a
creaking door. e. Audio Podcast - a digital audio or video file
or recording, usually part of a themed series, that can be
downloaded from a website to a media player or computer.
Elements of Sound Design
1. Dialogue- speech, conversation, voice-over.

Principles of Sound Design
1. Mixing - the combination, balance and control of multiple
sound elements.
2. Pace – timing control.
3. Transitions - How you get from one segment or element
to another.
4. Stereo Imaging – Using left and right channel for depth.

Common Audio File Formats
AAC (not hi-res) - Apple's alternative to MP3 – stands for
'Advanced Audio Coding'. Lossy and compressed, but sounds
generally better. Used for Apple Music streaming.
FLAC (hi-res): This lossless compression format supports hi-res
sample rates, takes up about half the space of WAV, and stores
metadata. It's royalty-free and is considered the preferred format
for downloading and storing hi-res albums.
MP3 (not hi-res): Popular, lossy compressed format ensures
small file size, but far from the best sound quality. Convenient for
storing music on smartphones and iPods.
Common Audio File Formats
OGG (not hi-res): Sometimes called by its full name, Ogg
Vorbis. A lossy, open-source alternative to MP3 and AAC,
unrestricted by patents. The file format used (at 320kbps)
in Spotify streaming.
WAV (hi-res): The standard format in which all CDs are
encoded. Great sound quality but it's uncompressed,
meaning huge file sizes (especially for hi-res files). It has
poor metadata support (that is, album artwork, artist and
song title information).
