SOLDERING

Advantage, Nature and Guidelines

Soldering is the process of joining two metals
together to form a reliable electrical path. The
process requires a focused, aware and disciplined
mind in order to ensure a safe and functional
product. A lot of electronic appliances such as flat-
screen television, DVD’s, computers, laptops,
cellphone and other similar gadgets relies from
the efficient and accurate process of soldering.
Without soldering, the electronic components will
be connected by bolt and nut or screw. Thus, a
skyrocket market price of a simple remote control
might cost thousands of pesos due to labor and
materials.
Advantages
 Permanent connection of joints prevents surface to oxidize.
 Prevents corrosion occurring within gaps.
 Electrical conductivity or continuous flow of current is
ensured.

Disdvantages
 Reliability of connection cannot be ensured because of
vibration and shock.
 Requires soldering iron to disconnect the electronic
component
We SOLDER…
 To fasten two metals and prevent them from moving
temporarily or permanently.
 To fasten disconnected parts or components from the
circuit board.

We DESOLDER…
 To replace non-functional components.
 To change the polarity of the connection.
 To disconnect components to be replaced.
Nature of Solering
 Low-temperature melting allow made by combining
various metals in different proportions.
 Common solder are made from tin and lead.
 Hand or machine solder

How to handle your
soldering iron?
CORRECT WRONG
Procedures BEFORE Soldering
 Prepare all the tools and materials in a clean and
unoccupied area.
 Place the design of the product in front of you.
 Make sure that the outlet where your soldering iron
will be plugged is functional, near and safe.
 Place the ventilator at the right/left back of the
shoulder to drive away toxic smoke created during the
process.
 Place the light at the right/left back of the shoulder to
prevent the creation of shadow in while working in tiny
areas.
Reminders while Soldering
 Always be aware where you place your soldering
iron to prevent short circuit or burn material or other
tools.
 The wire of your soldering iron should be parallel to
your arms so as to avoid intersection of soldering
iron and wire.
 Avoid touching sensitive parts of your body (face,
eyes, mouth and even face) to prevent the toxins
enter your body.
 Avoid eating or drinking.
Procedures AFTER Soldering
 Make sure that the soldering iron has already
cooled before keeping to prevent damage on
the nearby tools.
 Keep ALL the tools and materials used.
 Clean your working area and dispose all debris
in the trash bin accordingly.
 Clean your hands with soap and water after
working.
