¿WHAT IS EXPERIMENTATION WITH
ANIMALS?
Animal experimentation or vivisection (Previously this term was only used for test surgical
procedures performed on animals, now its meaning has been generalized to all tests with live
animals) designates those studies carried out to test medicines, cleaning products, cosmetics ,
surgical procedures, military tests, tobacco, agrochemical products, etc. The benefit that all
these aspects apparently bring to humanity seems to overshadow the fact of the pain and
suffering that are caused to animals. Laboratory animals can be subjected to procedures such as:
Deprivation of water, food and/or sleep. Force feeding, poisoning, burns, electrocutions, etc.
Induction of heart attacks, ulcers, cancer or stress. Infectious diseases. Mutilations or wounds of
different parts of the body. Brain damage or destruction of sensory organs.

The most commonly used animals in laboratories are mice and rats in general, due
to their easy handling, cheap housing, rapid reproduction, etc. But other animals
such as chimpanzees, monkeys, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, reptiles,
amphibians, etc., are also used. The estimate of animals used annually in
laboratories varies from 41 million to 100 million; this, not counting the
inaccuracy of the figures provided and the animals that are killed when there is
“excess product”. Some countries, for example, do not count specimens such as
rats and mice. The six countries that most use animals in laboratories are:

YEAR 2000
Mundialmente 41 – 100.000.000
Japón + 12.000.000
EEUU + 12.000.000
Gran Bretaña 2 – 3.000.000
Canadá 2 – 3.000.000
Francia 2 – 3.000.000
Alemania 2 – 3.000.000
What kind of practices do they carry out on
animals inside laboratories?
Animal rights movements have their origins in the first protective and conservationist
societies created in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but it was not until 1970 and
1980 that these movements began to gain relevance worldwide. Its main function is to
ensure the welfare of all animals and to respect their living conditions. In the case of
animals that are forced to remain in laboratories to undergo various procedures, the
animal protection groups are the ones who carry out demonstrations against these
macabre acts. It is necessary to promote an environmental culture that recognizes
respect for life in all its forms.
