Actors on the Database

Management Scene
Database Users
 Based on the DB interaction, DB users are divided into two
types
(i) Actors on the scene
People whose job is involved day-to-day use of large data types.
(ii) Workers behind the scene
People whose work is to maintain DB Environment like DB
design, development and operations of DB system environment.
Actors on the Scene
 DBA
 DB Designer
 End User
 System Analyst and Application Programmer(Software
Engineer)

 System Designers and implementers


 Tool Developers
 Operators and maintainence personnel
Actors on the Scene
Database Administrator( DBA):
 Responsibilities of DBA is to manage the primary and

secondary resources.
 In DB environment, primary resources->DB, secondary

resources->DBMS and related software.


 Authorizing access to the DB.

 Co-ordinating and monitoring use of DB.

 Acquiring hardware and software resources as needed.


Actors on the Scene
DB Designers:
 Identifying the data stored in the DB.
 Choosing appropriate DB structures to represent and store
data.
 Communicating with DB users and understand their
requirements, designs DB.
Actors on the Scene
End User: People whose job is to require access to the DB for querying,
updating and generating report.

Several Categories:

1. Casual End User: Access DB ocassionally. Not daily basis.

Example: Middle or High Level Manager

2.Naive or parametric end user:

Constantly querying and updating DB using canned transaction.

i.e standard types of queries and updates.

Example: Reservation agent –a request from the customer and check for
availability.

3.Sophisticated end user:
 Engineers, scientist, business analyst develop the DB as per
own requirements.
4. Standalone User:
 Maintain personal DB using ready made program packages.
 Exampe- If a Person running a business, he has to maintain its
financial data for IT purposes.
Actors on the Scene
System Analyst:
 Determines the requirements of end users.
 Develop the specification for canned transaction.
Application Programmer:
 Test, debug, document and maintain the canned documents.
Workers behind the scene
System Designers and implementers:
 Design and implement DBMS modules and interfaces is a

packages.
 Example: In complex databases controlling DB concurrencies,

processing query languages, handling recovery of data.

Tool Developers:
 Person who design and implement tools.

 Example Software Packages (optional) –purchase separately

to improve DB systems.
Workers behind the scene
Operation and Maintenance Personnel:
 Responsible for actual running and maintenance of hardware

and software.
