SYSTEM

Chapter 1

Figure A Figure B

Chapter 1
LESSON OBJECTIVES

To define hardware as consisting of physical components of a

computer system.
To identify internal hardware devices.
To identify external hardware devices and peripherals.

Chapter 1
SUCCESS CRITERIA

I can define hardware as consisting of physical components

of a computer system.
I can identify internal hardware devices.
I can identify external hardware devices and peripherals.

Chapter 1
HARDWARE

 Computer hardware is the physical parts or components of a computer or

the physical objects that are tangible.
 Eg : monitor, mouse, keyboard , computer data storage, hard disk drive
(HDD), graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard
 Hardware can be either external or internal.
 Internal hardware is every piece of electronics that is connected to your
motherboard. i.e. all the devices inside the case of a computer.
 External hardware is everything that is outside of the box of the computer.

Chapter 1
INTERNAL HARDWARE DEVICES

The following are the internal hardware devices:

 The motherboard
 Random access memory (RAM)
 Read-only memory (ROM)
 Video cards
 Sound cards
 Network Interface Cards
 Internal storage devices: hard disk drive (HDD) and solid
state drive (SSD).

Chapter 1
GROUP ACTIVITY

Research and identify the function of the internal hardware devices and
leave your answers in your notebooks:
Group 1: Motherboard & Internal Hard Disk Drive.
Group 2:RAM & ROM
Group 3:Video Card , Sound Card and Network Interface Card

Chapter 1
Motherboard
 The motherboard is a printed circuit board found in all computers.
 It allows the processor and other computer hardware to function and
communicate with each other.
 One of the major functions of a typical motherboard is to act as a kind of
‘hub’ that other computer devices connect to.

Random access memory (RAM)

 Random access memory (RAM) is an internal chip where data is temporarily
stored when running applications.
 This memory can be written to and read from.
 Since its contents are lost when power to the computer is turned off, it is
often referred to as a volatile or temporary memory.
 RAM stores the data, files or part of the operating system currently in use.

Chapter 1
Read-only memory (ROM)
 Read-only memory (ROM) is a memory used to store information that needs
to be permanent.
 These chips cannot be altered and can only be read from (hence their name).
One of the main advantages is that the information stored on the ROM chip is
not lost even when power is turned off to the computer.
 They are often referred to as non-volatile memories.

Video card
 A video card allows the computer to send graphical information to a video
display device such as a monitor, television or projector.
 It usually connects to the motherboard.

Chapter 1
Sound card
A sound card is an integrated circuit board that provides a computer with the ability to
produce sounds.

Network interface card (NIC)

A network interface card (NIC) is a component that allows a computer or any other
device to be connected to a network (for example, the internet); it can be wired or
wireless.

Internal hard disk drive/solid state drive (HDD/SSD)

Basically, hard disk drives (HDD) are one of the main methods for storing data and
files.

Chapter 1
EXTERNAL HARDWARE DEVICES

The following are examples of external hardware devices:

 Mouse
 Printers
 Speakers
 Microphone
 Monitors

Chapter 1
PLENARY

1.Name 2 internal hardware devices.

2.RAM is permanent memory . State True or False.
3.Name an external hardware device.
4.Hardware is a set of instructions given to the computer. State True or
False
5.Name an output device.

Chapter 1
