Reported statements

1. Start with a sentence in direct speech.


”We practiced the backflip for our dance yesterday” he told the teacher.
2. Find the reporting verb verb: say, tell, ask, order…
”We practiced the backflip for our dance yesterday” he told the teacher.
3. Identify all the pronouns that need changing
”We practiced the backflip for our dance yesterday” he told the teacher.
4. Identify the verb tense
”We practiced the backflip for our dance yesterday” he told the teacher.
5. Look for other time/place expression that might need changing
”We practiced the backflip for our dance yesterday” he told the teacher.
6. Start with the reporting verb, then change all the pronouns and back-shit the verb
He told the teacher (that) they had practiced the backflip for their dance the day before.

Reported commands and questions

1. Commands and requests: no tense needed. The verb is introduced by a to-infinitive. If negative, not to-
infinitive. Note that most direct speech orders are in the imperative form, and they do not have a subject.

”Don’t speak so loud” my mother ordered.


My mother ordered not to speak so loud.
2. Suggestions: no tense needed. The verb is in the -ing form.

”Why don’t we go out tonight?” Mike suggested.

Mike questions:
3. Yes/no suggested going out that
if/whether night. word order (auxiliary verbs like do, does, did are not used)
+ normal

”Do you like Stranger Things? ” She asked.


4. Wh- questions: maintain the question word but normal word order after.
She asked if I liked Stranger Things.

”Where are you going tomorrow? ” She wanted to know.


She wanted to know where I was going the following day.
