Computer Network
A computer network is a
telecommunications network that allows
computers to exchange data.
Computer networks are needed because we
need to communicate with others and share
data files and other resources.
Types of Network
 Local Area Network
 Metropolitan Area Network
 Wide Area Network
 Mobile Network
Local Area Network
Local Area Network is a group of
computers connected within a small
geographical area such as a
building, office, school, home, and
laboratory.
Advantages of LAN
 LAN is used for connecting two or more personal computers
through a communication medium such as twisted pair, coaxial
cable, etc.
 It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as
hubs, network adapters, and Ethernet cables.
 The data is transferred at an extremely fast rate in the Local
Area Network.
 Local Area Network provides higher security.
Disadvantages of LAN
Local” Area Networks are only good as far as you
can reach an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi signal.
Low privacy: A local area network administrator
can see every LAN user’s data files and internet
history.
High maintenance: Requires frequent
maintenance and upgrades by expert technicians.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A metropolitan area network
geographical area is larger than a LAN.
A metropolitan area network is a
network that covers a larger
geographic area by interconnecting a
different LAN to form a larger network.
Advantages of MAN
 Less Expensive: It is less expensive to attach MAN
with WAN Network. MAN gives you good efficiency of data. All
data on MAN is easily manageable in a centralized way.
 High Speed than WAN: The speed of data can easily reach 1000
Mbps, as MAN uses fiber optics. Files and database transfer rates
are fast.
 Sharing of the Internet: With the installation of MANs, users can
share their internet connection. In this way, multiple users can get
the same high-speed internet.
Disadvantage of MAN
 Difficult To Manage: It is very difficult to manage if the
size and number of LANs network increase. This is due
to security and extra configuration problems.
 Internet Speed Difference: It cannot work on phone
copper wires. Copper wires affect the speed of MAN. So
high cost is needed for fiber optics.
 Hackers Attack: In this network, there is a high risk of
attacking hackers as compared to LAN. So data may be
leaked. Highly security staff is needed in MAN.
Wide Area Network
Wide Area Network (also known as WAN)
technologies can provide good
performance for large-size networks
accommodating many
nodes/connections.
Advantages of WAN
• Increase efficiency
• Easy communication
• Large network cover
• Share information over the large area
• Message can be sent very quickly to anyone
else on the network
Disadvantages of WAN
• It is slow in speed
• It is complected and complex
• It is difficult to maintain the network
• It is very costly because we have to pay
every time to transfer data
• WAN is a big and complex problem
Mobile Network
A mobile network is a
telecommunications network that provides
services via radio signals for mobile
phones. It is commonly described as a
physical device that can be taken
anywhere.
Advantages of Mobile Network
 Higher efficiency and productivity of staff
 Better quality and flexibility of service you offer your
customers
 The ability to accept payments wirelessly
 Increased ability to communicate in and out of the
workplace
 Greater access to modern apps and services
Disadvantages of Mobile Network
 Costs - new technologies and devices are often costly
to purchase and require ongoing maintenance and
upkeep.
 Workplace distractions - as the range of technologies
and devices increases, so does the potential for them to
disrupt productivity and workflow in the business.
 Additional training needs - staff may need
instructions and training on how to use new technology.
