Grade 8
Ms. Burke
Objectives of the Lesson
By the end of this lesson, students
should be able to:
a. Define the term processor.
b. Outline the role of the processor.
c. State the functions of the
processor.
Do you know the parts
of the computer
system?
The Processor/Central Processing
Unit
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is also called
a central processor or main processor. It is the
brain of the computer. It takes raw data and
turns it into information, and it controls how
the rest of the computer works.
The Processor/Central Processing Unit
comprises two smaller units. These are the
Control Unit (CU) and the Arithmetic and Logic
Unit (ALU).
Control Unit
The Control Unit (CU) is the main
part of the CPU, it decides where
to send data for processing.
After processing the information is
returned to the control unit.
