Processor

The document discusses the processor and its role in a computer system. It defines the processor as the central processing unit or CPU, which is the brain of the computer. The CPU comprises a control unit and an arithmetic logic unit and controls how the computer works by processing data through input, processing, and output stages.

Processor

Grade 8
Ms. Burke
Objectives of the Lesson
By the end of this lesson, students
should be able to:
a. Define the term processor.
b. Outline the role of the processor.
c. State the functions of the
processor.
Do you know the parts
of the computer
system?
The Processor/Central Processing
Unit
 The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is also called
a central processor or main processor. It is the
brain of the computer. It takes raw data and
turns it into information, and it controls how
the rest of the computer works.
 The Processor/Central Processing Unit
comprises two smaller units. These are the
Control Unit (CU) and the Arithmetic and Logic
Unit (ALU).
Control Unit
The Control Unit (CU) is the main
part of the CPU, it decides where
to send data for processing.
After processing the information is
returned to the control unit.
Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)

Arithmetic and Logic Unit

performs mathematical and
logical functions.

Functions of a Processor
The function of the Central Processing Unit
or the Processor is to carry out the
instructions of the computer programs. The
processing of data to get information
involves three stages. These are input,
processing, and output. The CPU executes
program instructions, which are stored in a
computer’s memory (RAM).
