Identification of Environmental Aspects & Impacts

ASPECTS
An environmental aspect is an element of an organization's activities, products, or
services that has or may have an impact on the environment.
IMPACTS
Possible adverse effects caused by a development, industrial, or infrastructural
project or by the release of a substance in the environment.

Reliance Bangladesh LNG & Power Limited © 2022 RBLPL All Rights Reserved.
Methods of Identification of Environmental Aspects & Impacts

Focus on one category at a time to identify aspects.

Start with activities then move to products and finally,
services.
An activity, for instance, might be fueling operation, and
it may include several aspects, such as air emissions,
chemical usage and spills.
Each of these in turn has one or more impacts, from
degradation of air quality to depletion of natural
resources.

Identification of Environmental Aspects & Impacts

To identify Environmental Aspects & Impacts-

RBLPL must look at processes such as the following:
> Power Generation processes;
> environmental performance and procedures of contractors
and suppliers;
> waste processing;
> extraction and distribution of raw materials and natural
resources;

Strategies for minimizing Environmental Impact-
Air Emission Management

Air Emission Management

• Built-in Low-NOx burner in gas turbine will reduce the NOx emission.
• Continuous monitoring will be conducted at the stack, testing stack emission and ambient
air quality sampling.
• Moreover, third party monitoring and auditing will be conducted to identify the changes in
ambient air quality and its impact during operation.
• The project will emit more than 1 million tons of GHG hence, require a number of GHG
emission reduction technologies and related policies. In addition, green building concept
will be introduced in order to reduce energy consumption and sustainable energy use.
• Further to that, energy efficient lighting system, rain water harvesting system, roof top solar
panel system, biogas system from sewage materials and also green belt shall be adopted as
an offset technology for reduction of GHG in the local environment.

Noise Management
Noise Management

Engineering control
Engineering controls for noise management involve implementing physical changes to reduce
or control the generation, transmission, and reception of noise in a workplace or environment
• The power station will be designed and constructed to minimize generation of excessive
noise from the balance of plant and turbine operation as follows:
• The turbine and generator will be housed in soundproof building;
• Diffuser and bottom half of stack will be insulated;
• Additional baffles will be added inside the stack to reduce stack emission noise;
• Noise insulation surrounding turbine casings, and use of rigid foundations
• Insulated and sealing access doors to the turbine building.
• The rotating machinery, such as turbines, pumps, fans etc. should be covered with noise
proof hood to limit the spread of noise.
• Silencer should be used wherever possible.

Noise Management

Noise Management

Administrative control
Administrative controls for noise management involve implementing policies, procedures, and
practices to minimize or control exposure to noise in the workplace.
• Restriction of worker’s prolonged exposure to noise by rotating exposure every 2 hours
• The machineries should be maintained properly according to the provided instructions as
proper maintenance can decrease the level of noise significantly.

• A green belt consisting of trees of different heights and canopy coverage should be
developed along the boundary wall of the power plant area.
• Provide regular breaks in quieter areas to allow employees to recover from noise exposure
and reduce the cumulative effects on hearing.

Noise Management

Noise Management

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an essential component of a comprehensive noise

management program, especially when engineering and administrative controls alone cannot
reduce noise exposure to acceptable levels.
Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs):
Earplugs: These are inserted into the ear canal to reduce the entry of sound. They come in
disposable, reusable, and custom-molded forms.
Earmuffs: These cover the entire outer ear and create a seal with the head, providing a
physical barrier against noise.

Waste Water Management

 All waste water generated during the operational phase of the project will be
collected, treated and discharged by complying with the standard value of
parameters set by the regulatory body.
 Chemical waste waters will be drained and directly routed to the Chemical
waste water holding Pond and pumped to the pH regulation tank,
Coagulation tank, Flocculation tank and the Clarifier. From Clarifier it
flows to Treated waste water holding Pond
 The normal Oily Water will be directly drained to the Oily Waste water
holding pond and then pumped to the CPI oil separator for further
treatment. Then the treated Oily Waste Water flows to Chemical Waste
Water Holding Pond.
 Sewage treatment includes the pretreatment of sewage, biological treatments
(equalization, aerobic treatment) and chemical dosing(chlorination).
 Each type waste water after treatment will be collected to the central
monitoring basin.
 Waste water parameters will be checked before disposing to the central
monitoring basin.
 Only after ensuring the parameters within the standard range treated waste

Chemical Management

The chemical management plan addresses the sound management of chemicals

for prevention and minimizing the risks for the occupational exposure of the
chemical and release to the environment.

• Chemical inventory will be maintained during operational phase of

the Project.
• Each chemical will be stored in a designated area.
• All chemical container will be properly labelled.
• MSDS instruction will be incorporate with the standard operating
procedure for each chemical handling.
• Only authorized person will handle the chemical.
• Chemical storage area will be maintained properly sealed condition to
avoid any leakage to environment.

Reliance Bangladesh LNG & Power Limited © 2022 RBLPL All Rights Reserved.
Storage of Chemical
Before storing of any chemical it is important to ensure
that-
 the label on the container to determine the hazard
class & precautions to be taken
 Separation of incompatible materials
 Always segregation of chemicals will be done by
hazard class
 There will be restriction on access to toxic storage
areas whenever possible.
 There will be adequate means of dealing with
spillage and fire situations and that PPE is available
 adequate ventilation will be ensured.
 MSDS should be clearly visible

Reliance Bangladesh LNG & Power Limited © 2022 RBLPL All Rights Reserved.
Handling of Chemical

Before handling of any chemical-

 Label information and MSDS will be checked and to obey the warnings
and precautions given.
 Use appropriate PPE
 lay out the workspace appropriately to avoid knocking over containers
 In case of spills, immediately clean Carefully (without raising clouds of
dust / vapors

Procurement

 Purchasing department will include a list of the Environmental

responsibility criteria required of the organizations suppliers.

 Meeting such criteria would be a part of purchasing negotiations between

the organization and the supplier.
