Multi-Component
Machine
“Lightsaber”
By: Mr. Gravitt
BUILDING A MULTI
COMPONENT MACHINE!
• You don’t have to make a lightsaber,
if you have something else you
would like to make, ask the
instructor for permission, & get my
approval first.
• If you are unsure &/or you would like
to make a lightsaber, then follow the
directions.
BUILDING A MULTI
COMPONENT MACHINE!
• #1 thing that kiddos from the past
have made is Lightsabers.
• #2 most popular thing has been
Companion Cubes?
• #3 Thor’s Hammer
• A bunch of emblems, logos, & etc.
You have many Different Lightsabers to
choose from!

Step 4
• Now Mr. Gravitt
made all the different
parts as separate
files, but you can
have them all in 1 if
you would like to.
OnShape allows this
while many other
CAD software's do
not let you do this.
NOTES:
• There are a bunch of ways to attach
the different components together!
• Components will need to have gaps,
0.10, 0.20, 0.30 inches &/or etcetera
or you will not be able to assemble
you machine!
• Plastic printed parts are going to
shrink on you!!! The larger the part
the more the part will shrink…
There are MANY ways of
• Assembling the different parts:
1.Clips
2.Pins
3.Screws
4.Nuts & Bolts
5.Glues
6.Press Fit /
7.Slots
8.&/or etc.
NOTES:
• Here’s me designing a couple
different lightsaber’s.
• Started designing one from the Hilt
End & started designing the other
from the emitter end. You can do
either way?
1.Luke’s Lightsaber
2.Yoda’s Lightsaber
Step 5 – I’ve choose to use nuts & bolts
• By using LARGE HEAVY METAL NUTS &
BOLTS, so I can add some weight to it!
Should be easy to assemble & disassemble!
Step 6 – Different Materials
• I’m using Black TPU handle grips
• I’m using several different color plastics:
• Metallic Gold PLA
• Metallic Silver PLA
Step 7 – Different Materials
• I found some large Bolts & Nuts out in
the shop, then made drawings of them,
to use in my lightsaber.
Step 8 – TPU
• I just planned for the TPU to fit well into
the PLA handle & then also use some
rubber cement to help hold them in
place.
Step 9
• Designed it so that the BOLT can go in
here. Pause the printer, drop the bolt
into the print, then hit resume printing &
it will print the rest of the part right over
top of the bolt head!
Step 10
• Designed it so that the NUT can go in
here. Pause the printer, drop the nut
into the print, then hit resume printing &
it will print the rest of the part right over
top of the nut head! Will do this AGAIN
with a bolt in the other end.
Step 11
• Designed it so that the NUT can go in
here. Pause the printer, drop the nut
into the print, then hit resume printing &
it will print the rest of the part right over
top of the nut head! Will do this AGAIN
with a bolt in the other end.
Step 12 – TPU
• I just planned for the TPU to fit well into
the PLA handle & then also use some
rubber cement to help hold them in
place. Print it 4 times.
Step 13
• Designed it so that the BOLT can go in
here. Pause the printer, drop the bolt
into the print, then hit resume printing &
it will print the rest of the part right over
top of the bolt head!
Step 14
• Designed it so that the NUT can go in
here. Pause the printer, drop the nut
into the print, then hit resume printing &
it will print the rest of the part right over
top of the nut head! Will do this AGAIN
with a bolt in the other end. NOTE: This
part is obviously not finished…
Step 15
• Hilt, Bolt, Nut, & Center Sections
assembled.
Step 16.1
• Emitter, Cooling Fins, Mid Section, &
Handle Grips Assembled
Step 16.2
• Emitter, Cooling Fins, Mid Section, &
Handle Grips Assembled
