• Command line based operating systems require users to interact with the
system through the command line interface (CLI),
• which involves typing commands into a terminal window.
• This can be more efficient than using a graphical user interface (GUI) for
certain tasks, especially when working with large amounts of data or
performing repetitive tasks.
• Linux and Unix are two of the most widely used command line based operating
systems.
• MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) was a popular command line based
operating system for personal computers in the 1980s and early 1990s.
• Command line based operating systems are often preferred for performing

• GUI-based operating systems provide a graphical user interface (GUI) that

allows users to interact with the system using visual elements such as
windows, icons, and menus.
• This can make it easier for users to perform tasks and navigate the system,
especially for those who are not familiar with the command line interface.
• Windows and macOS are two of the most widely used GUI-based operating
systems.
• They are popular among both home and business users due to their ease of
use, compatibility with popular software applications, and support for a wide
range of hardware devices.
• GUI-based operating systems often include a wide range of built-in
applications and tools that allow users to perform tasks such as browsing the
web, managing files, editing documents, and creating multimedia content.
• These applications are often designed to be easy to use and accessible to
users of all skill levels.
