Volcanoes are majestic natural wonders that captivate our

imagination and shape the landscapes around us.

In this lesson, we will be able to

• learn about volcanoes

• prepare for volcanic events
• identify the different parts of a volcano
• appreciate the important benefits of
volcanic activity
• make a volcano model
A

VOLCANO
An opening in the Earth's surface.
Usually found in a mountain, the opening
allows gas, hot magma, and ash to escape
from beneath the Earth's crust.
How are volcanoes form?

Volcanoes are formed when

molten rock called magma rises
to the surface. The magma can
come from the Earth's mantle or
from subduction zones where one
tectonic plate slides beneath
another.

SILL:

Flat rock formation that forms when

molten magma cools and solidifies in
a crack or fissure.

Why do volcanoes

erupt?
The Earth's crust is made up of huge slabs
called plates, which fit together like a
jigsaw puzzle. These plates sometimes
move. The friction causes earthquakes and
volcanic eruptions near the edges of the
plates. The theory that explains this
process is called plate
What will happen if

the volcano erupts?

Volcanic eruptions can be dangerous, but with proper preparation,
we can stay safe. Here's how:

5 ways volcanoes

benefit Earth
1.)Hot springs and geysers associated with volcanoes can
be used to generate electricity
2.)Raw materials
Sulfur, copper and gold are produced from volcanic
activity, Krippner said. Diamonds are also brought up to
the surface from the mantle from a rare kind of magma,
called kimberlite.
3.)Help cool the earth by removing heat from the interior
4)It gives us fertile soils, which are great for farming and
crops.“
5.)Volcanoes play a significant role in land formation.
When a volcano erupts, it spews out lava, ash, and other
volcanic materials that can accumulate over time and form
new land.

the Mauna Loa in

States at 9,170 feet
meters. The Mauna

MATERIALS
Dishwashing liquid

Water bottle

Baking soda

Food coloring

Clay

Vinegar
PROCEDURE

Step 1: Mix the dish soap, water, white vinegar, and food
coloring and pour it into the empty soda bottle.

Step 2: Make a baking soda slurry with ½ cup baking soda

and ½ cup water. Mix it thoroughly with a spoon, until it’s
completely dissolved.

Step 3: Now, it’s eruption time! Quickly but carefully pour

this slurry into the bottle and step back. Now, watch the
volcano erupt and spill out red lava
So , what’s going on?

In a nutshell, the primary explanation to the chemical

reaction you have just witnessed is that mixing vinegar,
which is acid, and baking soda, which is base, results in
the formation of carbon dioxide gas, forcing the
contents of the bottle out of the volcano.

When an acid and a base are mixed, they react to

neutralize each other resulting in production of salt and
in the process, produce carbon dioxide. In real
volcanoes, carbon dioxide is also present when they
erupt!
