Dear God,

We thank you for a hundredfold for the love and

care that you have given us. May we in return to
you your good works by multiplying it with love
and respect, adding more faith, subtracting the
unworldly behavior and evil works and dividing
your given talents to others so we can sum it all
and be united as one in your family. Amen
Quarter 4 Lesson 3
Hinge Theorem
and its Converse
LESSON OBJECTIVES

Hinge Theorem;
2. illustrate Hinge theorem and Converse of
Hinge Theorem; and
3. Apply hinge theorem and its converse in
real-life situation.

MOTIVATION
NATIONAL READING PROGRAM
Are you familiar with hinge devices?
Hinge devices are used to fasten or join two
things together and allow adjustment, rotation,
twisting or pivoting. The picture below is called
hinge which is attached to our doors at home. It
is responsible for the opening and closing of our
doors.
Scissors, compass and folding
ladder are just some of the
examples of hinge
Imagine a gate with two
doors, the doors can be
opened wider.
The doors form a triangle on
opening from the hinges side, and the swing side forms
different triangles by moving the door wider.
The wider the door moves;
the angle and length also increases.
REVIEW
B. Directions: Use the figure below to answer the following.
In the map below, the locations form a triangle.
Dina, a student, is at home while Alvin, her
classmate is at school. In this situation, answer the
questions that follow.
B. Directions: Use the figure below to answer the following.
Alvin

Dina

1. Who is farther from Church given their

locations, Dina or Alvin? Dina
2. What triangle inequality theorem is applied in
this situation? Angle-Side Inequality Theorem
B. Directions: Use the figure below to answer the following.
Alvin

Dina

3. Dina requested Alvin to pick her up in going to

Church. Will Alvin be able to travel the shortest
path to go to Church given Dina’s request? What
triangle inequality theorem is applied in this
situation No, by Triangle Inequality Theorem
B. Directions: Use the figure below to answer the following.
Alvin

Dina

4. Given the same time started and same rate of

walking, who among the two can arrive at the
Market first? Alvin
B. Directions: Use the figure below to answer the following.

If a new road will be constructed connecting the

School and the Market, is the constructed road
longer than the road between Home and Church?
What triangle inequality theorem is applied in this
situation? Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem
ACTIVITY
Which of the following pictures show a wide
opening of the scissors?

Obviously, the answer is Picture B since its

angle is greater than that of Picture A.
Although, a pair of scissors has the same length,
its opening (dashed line) depends on the angle of
adjustment of the user.

PROPER
Hinge Theorem
Hinge Theorem (SAS Inequality Theorem)
If two sides of one triangle are congruent to two sides of
another triangle, but the included angle of the first
triangle is greater than the included angle of the second,
then the third side of the first triangle is longer than the
third side of the second.
Hinge Theorem
Example 1: Write the inequality relating to and

Example 2: Compare the lengths of the third side of
∆BLU and ∆RED.

Example 3: Which of the following statements must be
true?
a. AS < YU c. SK < YU
b. SK > YU d. AK = YU

Converse of Hinge Theorem
Converse of Hinge Theorem
(SSS Inequality Theorem)
If two sides of one triangle are
congruent to two sides of another
triangle, but the third side of the Since
first triangle is longer than the third
side of the second, then the included
angle of the first triangle is larger then By Converse of Hinge
than the included angle of the Theorem
second.
