Discuss and Define Community-Based Research
Define
Community-Based
Research.
CBR is research performed with both
the public community and the
academic community working side by
side to accomplish a knowledge-based
goal. It is a way to influence and
benefit humanity through unity.
Essentially the interdisciplinary teams ranging from the researcher themselves to the community
promotora all are stakeholders in the execution of community health programs. It is worth noting
that the community as a whole is the one who gains the most and also has the most to lose too as
the whole purpose of the health program is for the community’s sake.
From my understanding, those who will look at the CBR years down the line will have all the
benefits as they can gain the knowledge and experience distilled from the research gathered. It is
important to recognize that all parties involved those past, present, and future have some stake in
the outcome of the community health program and its research associated with it.
What is the importance of health
science student involvement in
community outreach programs?
Community may gain someone who has opinions and ideas that are
unique and different than what can be normally found.
The student may not be from the community and can introduce novel
ideas that otherwise would not be considered. This two-way street
exchange enhances the overall well-being of both the student and the
community, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the
duration of the service opportunity.
What is the distinction between Community
Engagement and Community Outreach?
Creating a survey to be given by the CHW would be the first step. This would be
distributed to schools, immigration centers, and childcare centers. It could take the
form of surveys asking questions such as if they had wheezing or whistling in their
chest. It can ask if they have had a diagnosis of asthma or have had pneumonia before.
This survey would allow healthcare professionals to determine where to focus more
resources in the El Paso region regarding asthma. The health care professionals would
then be able to hold monthly clinics to screen more effectively and diagnose children
with asthma in the aforementioned selected locations. Then the next part of the project
can come into play. Additionally, the newly gathered data can be shared with other
organizations to allow for other interventions.
Step 2
A system can be established where albuterol inhalers can be
distributed to the local community to those who have been
diagnosed. Albuterol inhalers can be bought at the lowest
seen of $17.30.4 It is worth noting that Medicaid does not
cover undocumented children. In order to raise funding
applying for grants or appealing to private corporations may
be necessary. The project would be able to lower the cost of
care for many patients and minimize adverse symptoms seen
in asthma exacerbation thus saving costs for the local
infrastructure and not contributing to visits to the emergency
department. These medications can be distributed via
community health care workers.
