OBJECTIVE
 To conduct a performance test on an air
conditioning test rig to determine the coefficient
of performance (COP)
AIR CONDITIONING TEST RIG
 The air conditioning test rig is a specialized apparatus used for
evaluating the performance, efficiency, and characteristics of air
conditioning systems. It typically consists of various components such
as compressors, condensers, evaporators, refrigerant flow control
devices, and instrumentation for measuring parameters like
temperature, pressure, and flow rates. These test rigs are essential for
research, development, and quality assurance in the air
conditioning industry.
AIR CONDITIONING TEST RIG
APPLICATIONS
1. Performance testing: Testing the efficiency, Cooling capacity ,
Energy consumption.
2. Component testing: Evaluating individual components such
as compressor ,condenser etc.
3. Research and development.
4. Quality control: Ensuring that manufacturing air conditioning
units meets quality standards.
5. Environmental testing: Assessing the environmental impact
of air conditioning system

VAPOUR COMPRESSION REFRIGERATION SYSTEM WORKING PRINCIPLE

 Refrigerant circulates in a closed system.

 Four stages: compression and expansion.
 Liquid to vapor state change occurs.
 Heat absorption and expulsion happen.
 Results in lowering conditioned space temperature.
MAIN WORKING COMPONENTS

1. COMPRESSOR

2. CONDENCER

3. EXPANSION DEVICE

4. EVAPORATOR
FUNCTIONS OF COMPONENTS
COMPRESSOR

It operates by converting low-

pressure, low-temperature gas
into high-pressure, high-
temperature gas.
CONDENSER

It works by transferring
heat from the refrigerant
to the surrounding air or
water, facilitating the
cooling process.
EXPANSION DEVICE

The expansion valve regulates

the flow of refrigerant into the
evaporator coil, where it
undergoes a phase change from
liquid to gas, absorbing heat
from the surrounding air in the
process, thus cooling the space.
EVAPORATOR

•The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the

indoor air, causing the refrigerant to
evaporate from a liquid to a gas state. This
absorption process cools the air that is
then circulated back into the room,
creating a comfortable
indoor environment.
COMPARISON
When comparing an air conditioning test rig made for a project with one
available in the market.

1. Customization: - Project-made rig: Can be customized to meet specific project

requirements, including size, capacity, and features.
-Market-available rig: Often comes with standardized features and
specifications, with limited customization options.

2. Cost: - Project-made rig: Initial costs might be lower, depending on the materials
and components used, but labor costs could be significant.
- Market-available rig: Generally higher initial costs due to the inclusion of pre-
engineered components and professional assembly.
3. Quality and Reliability: - Project-made rig: Quality and reliability depend on the
expertise and craftsmanship .
- Market-available rig: Usually manufactured by reputable companies.

4. Lead Time: - Project-made rig: Construction time may vary depending on the
complexity of the design and availability of resources.
- Market-available rig: Typically available for immediate purchase, with shorter lead
times.
6. Support and Maintenance: - Project-made rig: Support and maintenance depend on
the availability of expertise within the project team or external contractors.
- Market-available rig: Usually comes with manufacturer support, warranty, and
access to technical assistance and spare parts.

EXPERIMENTAL COMPONENTS

 ENERGY METER: An electric meter, or energy meter, is a device that

measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a building,
tenant space, or electrically powered equipment
 DP SWITCH: Switches are used to turn electric circuits ON and OFF
and to switch electric circuits.
 PRESSUE GUAGES: Pressure gauges are used to monitor and control
pressure – which is often a necessity in industrial processing. Without
pressure gauges, industrial processing systems would be both
unpredictable and unreliable
 THERMOCOUPLE: Thermocouples play a vital role in air-conditioning
test rigs by accurately measuring temperatures at critical points,
aiding in performance evaluation and optimization.
