2 Chapter Lesson 4 Estimating Products

The document discusses estimating products by rounding numbers to the highest place value. It provides examples of estimating multiplications of large numbers by rounding the factors and adding the place values of the products. The document also has an example of estimating costs and budgets for a party using the rounding technique.

Directions:
Round off the following to its
highest place value.
2 349 2 000 12 654 10 000
5 932 6 000 3 468 3 000
732 700 5 879 6 000
892 900 776 800
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner
should be able to:
 Accurately round off whole numbers;
 Correctly estimate the products of 3- to 4-digit
numbers by 2- to 3-digit numbers; and
 Correctly solve real-life problems involving
estimation in multiplying numbers.
Estimating Product

The process of rounding numbers to

tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on, to
produce an approximate product.
In estimating products, you
must master the concepts of
rounding off numbers and special
products.
Imagine if you are good with estimating
numbers, whether you are in the mall,
shopping, checking if your money is enough
to buy several goods, finding the best offer
for the same product, you might need to
estimate how much it would cost you to buy
the same product for other people like the
example below.
Example:
The town mayor needs to distribute
food packs to typhoon victims. Estimate
how many food packs are needed for
94 shelters if each shelter has 389
people?
How do we estimate the product of two large numbers?
Estimate the product of 389 and 94.
Step 1:
Estimate the factors by rounding off each factor
to the highest place value.

389 400
94 90
Step 2:
Multiply the digits with the highest value.

𝟒𝟎𝟎
𝟒 𝟐 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒔 Add the

𝒙 𝟗
𝟗𝟎 1 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐
number of
zeros

Step 3:
𝟑𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎
𝟑𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎 3 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑠
Affix the number of zeros of the factors.
Example:
Estimate the product of 638 34.
Step 1:
Estimate the factors by rounding off each factor
to the highest place value.

638 600
34 30
Step 2:
Multiply the digits with the highest value.

𝟔𝟎𝟎
𝟔 𝟐 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒔 Add the

𝒙 𝟑
𝟑𝟎 1 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐
number of
zeros

Step 3:
𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎𝟎
𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎𝟎 3 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑠
Affix the number of zeros of the factors.
Example:
Estimate the product of 2947 22.
Step 1:
Estimate the factors by rounding off each factor
to the highest place value.

2 947 3 000
22 20
Step 2:
Multiply the digits with the highest value.

𝟑
𝟑𝟎𝟎𝟎 3 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒔 Add the

𝒙 𝟐
𝟐𝟎 1 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐
number of
zeros

Step 3:
𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎
𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎 4 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑠
Affix the number of zeros of the factors.
Example:
Sheila has a budget of ₱84 000 for
her daughter’s party to celebrate her first
birthday. She chose a restaurant that
charges ₱385 for every adult and ₱325
for every child. She plans to invite 82
adults and 67 children. About how much
does she have left for other expenses?
Step 1: Get the estimated charge of restaurant for
both adults and children.
Adults Children

385 𝑥 82 3 2 5 𝑥 67

400 𝑥 80 ¿ 32 000 300 𝑥 70 ¿ 21 000

Step 2: Get the estimated sum of the restaurant
charge. Round off each addends to the highest place
value.
Estimated Estimated
restaurant charge restaurant charge
for adult. for children.

32 000 21 000

30 000 +¿ 20 000 ¿ 50 000

Step 3: Get the estimated budget for other party
expenses. Subtract charge to the budget. Round off
each addends to the highest place value.

Estimated budget Estimated restaurant

for the party. charge for adult and
children.

84 000 50 000

80 000 − 50 000 ¿ 30 000
