Translating Verbal
Phrase to Mathematical
Expression
Verbal Phrase
• Verbal Phrase or English Phrase contains words
and/or numbers that can be translated into a
mathematical expression.

Mathematical Expression
• is an expression containing numbers and/or
variables and operations on those numbers and
variables.
Example:

Expression Verbal Phrase

•6 + 9 • The sum of 6 and 9
•8 – x • 8 less a number
• n – 12 • A number minus 12
• 5 + 2y • Five plus twice a number
Example:

Verbal Phrase Expression

• 4 times a number plus 7 • 4x + 7

• The product of 8 and a number • 8●y or 8y
