Human health is influenced by many factors like
nutritional, biological and chemical. It is quite true that
environment has a direct impact on those living in it and
many diseases are the outcome of man’s adjustment.

Types of chemical hazards

• Carcinogens : Chemicals that cause cancer, cells grow

uncontrollably : cancer often has a genetic component but
there are a wide variety of environmental carcinogens;
cigarette smoke.
• Chemical Mutagens: causes genetic changes or mutations;
birth defects.
• Teratogens: chemical that harm embryos and foetuses.
• Neuro Toxins: chemical That effects nervous system; include
heavy metals and pesticides.
• Allergens: substances that over activate the immune
system; animal proteins tobacco smoke and antibiotics
• Endocrine disruptors: chemical that interfere with the
endocrine system; hormones regulate growth, development
and sexual maturity.
 BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS

❑ Biological agents are living things, or products of living things,

that can cause illness and disease in humans.

❑ Biological agents include viruses, bacteria and fungi, as well

as parasitic worms and some plants.

❑Biological agents enter the body when they are inhaled, eaten
(ingested) or absorbed. Most biological agents are inhaled.
Once inside the body, these infectious agents can multiply
quickly and may be passed from one person to another.
TYPES OF BIOLOGICAL
HAZARDS

❑ Virus and bacteria, plants,

birds and animals, humans,
and plants, can all pose
what is referred to as a
biological hazard. This type
of hazard can be in the form
of allergies, infections (e.g.
hepatitis), and even cancer.

Influenza, Tuberculosis,
Common cold and Lyme
disease.
HUMAN RIGHTS & ENVIRONMENT
HUMAN RIGHTS are the rights that a human being must enjoy
on this earth.
The principles of draft declaration are as follows :
• It deals with human rights for an ecologically-sound
environment, sustainable development & peace for all.
• It mainly deals with human rights related to an environment
free from pollution and degradation.
• It deals with right of every person to environmental
information, education & awareness.
• It deals with the duties to protect & preserve the
environment.
• This lays stress on social justice and equity with respect to
use of natural resources.
HIV/AIDS
AIDS, the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome is not a
hereditary disease but is caused by HIV (Human Immuno
Deficiency Virus)
Source of AIDS
• AIDS is a man-made epidemic produced by genetically
engineered laboratory produced virus.
• There is decline in T cells which are the key infection
fighters in the immune system.
• HIV destroys these cells as a result of which various
types of infectious diseases due to microbial invasion
occur.
 EFFECTS OF HIV/AIDS ON ENVIRONMENT
• Due to AIDS, large number of deaths occur which affect the
local environment & natural resources.
• Due to deaths, there is loss of labour & level of production
decreases.
• With fewer adults, young members with limited resources
&lack of experience find it difficult to look after perennial
crops & prefer crops requiring less time & labour.
• Demand of fuelwood increases. More timber is required for
making coffins. More water is required for maintaining
hygiene .
Value education
 Value education helps in arriving at value based judgments
in life based on practical understanding of various natural
principles rather than acquiring certain prejudices.
Value education encompasses human values, social values,
professional values, religious values, national &
environmental values.
Value education increases awareness about our national
history, our cultural heritage, national pride, community
development and environment.
 VALUE BASED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

❑ HUMAN VALUES : Preparation of textbooks and

resource materials about environmental education can
play an important role in building positive attitudes
about environment. The basic human value “man in
nature” needs to be infused through the same.
❑ SOCIAL VALUES : Love, compassion, tolerance, justice
which are the basic teachings of most of our religions
need to be woven into environmental education.
❑ CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS
VALUES : These values
emphasize that man should
not exploit nature without
nurturing her. Our cultural
customs and rituals teaches
us to respect every aspect of
nature.
❑ ETHICAL VALUES :
Environmental education
should encompass the ethical
values of earth-centric rather
than human-centric world
view. It promotes earth
citizenship thinking where
every individual thinks about
the earth’s betterment before
anything.
Women and child welfare
❑ WOMEN WELFARE : Women are often the worst victims of
communal enimities.
There are many “WOMEN GROUPS” who actively take up
women welfare issues and legally constituted “WOMEN
CELLS” that exist almost everywhere and fight for women
rights and dignity. There is a full fledged MINISTRY FOR
WOMEN AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT whose sole aim is to
work for the welfare and up liftment of women
encompassing family planning.
 The NATIONAL NETWORK FOR WOMEN
AND MINING (NNWM) with about 20
groups in different states of India is
rightly fighting for “gender audit” of
India’s mining companies. Besides the
government initiatives there are now a
number of non-government
organisations (NGO’s) mostly as MAHILA
MANDALS to create awareness amongst
women of remote villages even to
empower them, train them and educate
them.
❑ CHILD WELFARE : Children are considered to be the
assets of the society. 20 million children are estimated to
be working as child labours, some of them works in
hazardous industries which affect the child’s health.
❑ Poverty is the main reason for a child to be deprived of
proper education, hygiene, nutritive food and shelter. To
improve the conditions of such deprived children the UN
General Assembly in 1959 adopted the DECLARATION OF
THE RIGHTS OF A CHILD. After the UN convention, it
became an International Law.
❑ The law defines right of the child to survival, protection,
development and participation. The right to survival
emphasizes on adequately good standards of living, good
nutrition and health.
❑ The right to protection means freedom from exploitation,
abuse and inhuman treatment.
❑ The right to development ensures access to education,
social security and right to leisure and recreation.

many ways.
– A positive growth of population can bring happiness and
success to a country along with adequate facilities for
men, women and children in a society.
– With proper functioning of the above mentioned groups
and organisations, many problems regarding human health
and environmental issues can be minimized to a great
extent.
