I was assigned as an Junior Site Engineer at the Site.

It is the NH project for Rehabilitation and Upgradation of the existing road to 2 Lane
road with paved shoulder.
This is the RIGID Pavement type of road construction.

This project comes under PWD Nanded and Kalyan Toll is executing the Project.

My Internship is from 10/01/2024 to 10/06/2024 with stipend of Rs. 10000

• The Crust size is 1.080 meters which is being constructed in which Excavation is done till 1.2 meters to replace the existing BC
soil(optional) with MURUM as it doesn't contain any organic matters and can be compacted easily forming hard surfaces.
• After that subgrade layer is prepared of thickness 500 mm using WMM.
• Then GSB layer of 150 mm thickness is applied. Then DLC of M10 grade of 150mm thickness.
• The lastly PQC pf m40 grade of thickness 290mm is constructed using paver.
Training and Activity Done

• The day when I joined the internship, Excavation around the toe of the existing road was going on.
• Also cutting of the existing flexible pavement using cold Milling Machine Wirtgen W-100 was ongoing.
• I got the opportunity to be on the Milling machine to understand its usage and working principle.
• I have been Embankment construction , on the excavation work also to understand type of working practices
used in excavation of the road construction.
• As a Jr. Site Engineer I have been trained to operate very important and useful surveying Instrument viz. Auto
Level Machine.
• Level Machine is used in conjunction with a levelling staff to establish the relative height or levels (the vertical
separation) of objects or marks and to measure height differences and to transfer, measure, and set heights of
known objects and marks.
• After the excavation part, Murum filling part and Subgrade preparation part was also done.
• I have also got to know type of safety measure to be taken while working on the site.
• Understood about the different types of Machinery such as Grader, Roller, Pokhlan, JCB machine its uses,
working principle.
• Built up new connections and network of people.
Actual Site Details

1. Embankment construction by excavating of existing road shoulder.

2. Excavation is done till the RCC Drain bottom i.e. upto ht 1.2 m. 1. Cutting of the existing flexible pavement
3. For checking the height differences and marking out the desire level Auto 2. This cutting material will be reused by proper
Level is used. treatment at the Treatment plant.
3. The depth of the cutting varies at different chainage
between 180mm to 350 mm.
This is the WIRTGEN W-100H Cold Milling machine i.e. Bitumen Extractor consists of a large conveyer belt for transferring of the asphalt into the
HYWA.
Cold milling machines are used to remove asphalt surfaces quickly and efficiently. In doing so, they create a level foundation with the specified width and
depth that is required for paving new surface layers of uniform thickness.
Embankment preparation process.
Proper Safety measures have been taken such as gunny bags, Warning
boards are placed while working on site.
• After embankment cutting using the level machine ,staff we take the height differences at every 20 m.
• Considering the TBM (Temporary Benchmark) as the BS(Back Sight) and FS(Four Sight).
• Using this we find our the RL(Reduced Level).
• The value of the TBM are already defined. In the above case we have TBM no.49/1
• After Embankment cutting, and marking the ht. differences Grading is done
using the grader.
• This grader will create a flat surface from the gravel area.
• It clears all the uneven surfaces removing the excess materials and gravels
resulting in creating flat surfaces for further measure.
• After levelling the surface , rolling is done in order to ensure proper compaction of the
surface.
• Typically Rolling is done in 7 stages- first plain pass (No Vibrations), 2 low pressure rolling
(pressure upto 30 tons) , 2 high pressure rolling (pressure upto 100 tons) then 1 at low
pressure and final Plain pass with zero vibration.
• This is done to ensure proper settlement and compaction of the surface.
• Murum filling in the excavated area and Subgrade layer construction is
done.
• Using the level machine we have calculated the amount of Murum
required to get the desired thickness.
• Proper murum Filling, Grading & Rolling job is done with subgrade
preparation.
• Now Preparing the Subgrade Top
• After murum filling and grading, water is sprinkled over the rolled surfaces using the water tanker.
• This practice is done in order to because when water is added to soil with a low moisture content, it makes it easier for particles to
move past each other. This helps to settle the soil and make it denser.
• Also to avoid dust flow on a moving traffic.
• After the surface becomes dry rolling is to be done. This will help in proper compaction
• Analysing the height levels and measuring the height differences of the filled surface using
the Level machine
• After this we will do the ranging for the preparation of the Subgrade top.
Installation of Pre-cast utility pipes before the Subgrade top layer
• This is the chainage marking. These markings are
marked on both side of the road at any distances • Using the chainage marking, here we had
and some are on the culverts, some on the marked the centre line and the toe of the
retaining wall also. road using the tape and metal rods.
• This helps in getting the centreline of the road • After marking out the centre line, we will
now mark the centre line for every 20 m.
• This marking of center line using this
rods in an alignment between two end
points is called as ranging.

• This is done to align intermediate

points on the chain so that the
measurements are along the line.
Safety Measures

• Wherever excavation, cutting work is going on we have installed the Warning boards in order to
maintain smooth flow of the traffic.
• Gunny bags are kept along the side of the ongoing cutting area and radium is applied on each of the
bag.
• Safety ribbons (Danger illuminated radium) were also applied.
• For smooth traffic flow , cutting/ excavation work is started 20 m away from any intersection, small
bridges, junctions etc.
• On working on the Road construction site safety is the top preference.
• Speed limit boards were also installed.
• After the work for the day is done, proper safety measures are taken.
